The Emergency Department at Southmead Hospital is one of the busiest EDs in the Southwest having over 100,000 attendances per year. This echoes the diverse population of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset providing a broad spectrum of clinical presentations. Furthermore, the patient population reflects the vast tertiary services available within the hospital, to include Vascular, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Transplant and Urology, Renal Medicine, Neurosciences and Orthopaedics.
Southmead ED provides 24/7 Consultant-led trauma care and the opportunity for all junior doctors to experience and immerse themselves in trauma medicine. The department is on Level 0 of the Brunel Building.
The appointment is subject to the Terms and conditions of service for specialty doctors (England) 2021: SAS contract 2021. The appointee will be expected to work within the facilities available to the Group and any new service developments are subject to the provision of necessary resources within the Trust. There is an active appraisal and development programme. The appointee must be fully registered with the General Medical Council with a license to practice and is advised to maintain up to date membership of a recognised medical defence organisation.

1. Clinical Duties – The appointee will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues with demonstration of professional values as per the Good Clinical Practice (ii)
2. Study & Research - The appointee can request up to a maximum of 30 days study leave within a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Service. The Trust is committed to ensuring that support is given for Continuing Medical Education. The appointee will be required to fulfil the requirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil the requirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council. The appointee will not necessarily be expected to undertake research however opportunities do exist and encouragement is given to develop collaborative projects with other departments within Trust or with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to submit all research development plans which have resource implications to the Clinical Director prior to implementation
3. There are professionally staffed Medical Libraries in the Medical Postgraduate Centre at Southmead Hospital, with a rapid service between this and the University Library situated in the centre of Bristol city. A computer literature search facility is available for which a charge is made, and the library has links with other networks.
