The role
London South Bank University is excited to be recruiting for the following Lecturer (Teaching & Research) roles within our vibrant School of Engineering and Design:
- 3 Lectureships in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design
- 1 Lectureship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- 1 Lectureship in Chemical Engineering
- 5 Lectureships in Civil and Building Services Engineering.
Our teaching and research community brings together engineers, designers, innovators and sustainability specialists who are committed to shaping a cleaner, smarter and more equitable future. We work closely with industry to solve real‑world engineering and design challenges, and our graduates are known for combining strong technical and analytical capability with creativity, practical problem‑solving and design thinking.
These positions offer excellent opportunities for emerging academics to contribute to the continued development of our Engineering and Design portfolio. Successful candidates will play a key role in delivering inspiring, practice‑led teaching, supporting student learning, and shaping an industry‑relevant curriculum that integrates core engineering principles with creativity, sustainability and innovation.
You will be encouraged and supported to develop your own research and enterprise portfolio in areas aligned to the School’s priorities – such as sustainable energy systems and infrastructure, materials engineering innovation, or environmental resilience and coastal futures. Working within our interdisciplinary environment, you will have opportunities to collaborate across engineering disciplines and engage with industry, applying your expertise to real‑world problems and contributing to research funding bids, knowledge‑exchange activities and enterprise projects.
Strengthening our relationships with employers, supporting student enterprise, and contributing to live or practice‑based projects will be an important part of the role, helping ensure that our graduates are well equipped to shape the engineering challenges of tomorrow.
About You:
We are looking to hear from candidates who can demonstrate:
- A strong foundation in the selected discipline, with expertise that complements our teaching and research strengths.
- Experience of teaching, tutoring or demonstrating in higher education, including project‑based or active‑learning environments.
- An emerging track record of research, scholarship or professional practice, evidenced through high‑quality journal publications, project outputs or engagement with industry.
- The ability to deliver modules outside of immediate research expertise, across a wider Engineering and Design curriculum including, inter alia, sustainability; circular economy; engineering management; systems design; design, construction and manufacturing practice; problem‑solving methodologies; and many others.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, and a commitment to inclusive, student‑centred learning.
The ideal candidate will hold a Doctoral degree in an engineering discipline and will have a recognised record of post‑doctoral training. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience of interdisciplinary collaboration, industry engagement or applied design and engineering practice. Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects and success with research bidding is highly desirable, as is a willingness to teach across disciplinary boundaries.
In addition to your teaching and learning experience, you will be an established researcher with a record of high-quality outputs and a proven ability to secure research funding. We welcome applications from candidates whose research demonstrates societal impact, and where there is evidence of knowledge exchange, business or community engagement, and national and international collaboration. Experience of doctoral level supervision would also be an advantage.
This post is open on a full-time, permanent basis to candidates who are REF- able at the time of appointment. Applicants should have a record of high-quality outputs in interdisciplinary research that meet REF standards. Applicants who do not currently meet REF criteria, may be offered a fixed-term appointment.
