Salary: £32,000–£35,000 FTE (pro rata), depending on experience
Hours: 25–27.5 hours/week, Monday–Friday, 9.30am–3.00pm (flexible for the right person)
About the role
NIRI is an innovation and research business based in Leeds, working with world-leading brands to develop new materials, products and technologies. We're an ambitious, entrepreneurial SME, and small enough that people are genuinely trusted to get on with things.
We're looking for an experienced finance professional to take ownership of our day-to-day finance function, reporting directly to the CEO and Chairman. It's a senior role with full responsibility and real autonomy — built around a part-time schedule, so you get the seniority without the full-time hours.
What you'll be responsible for
Day-to-day finance
● Purchase and sales ledgers, including credit control
● Supplier payments and company bill payment
● Bank and company credit-card reconciliations
● Bookkeeping records, kept accurate and current
● Routine customer and supplier finance queries
Payroll, VAT and month end
● Monthly payroll
● VAT returns
● Month-end reconciliations
● Schedules and information for year-end accounts, liaising directly with our external accountant
Cash flow and reporting
● Maintaining an accurate live view of the company's cash position
● Cash-flow forecasts, flagging issues before they become problems
● Financial reporting for the Managing Director and management team
Occasionally
● A small amount of general office support — greeting visitors, answering calls — as part of being embedded in a small, hands-on team
What we're looking for
Several years' experience running the finances of an SME, confident across the full financial cycle end to end. Practical judgement, attention to detail and common sense matter more than formal qualifications — you don't need to be a qualified accountant, though you might be one.
● Comfortable and accurate across ledgers, reconciliations, VAT, payroll and month-end
● Confident with accounting software (Xero) and Excel
● Self-motivated — you notice when something isn't right and resolve it without being asked
● Organised, discreet with confidential information, and commercially minded
● Looking for a long-term part-time role, not a stepping stone
Why this role might suit you
This role is designed for an experienced finance professional who wants genuine seniority and responsibility without full-time hours — whether that means working around other commitments or simply choosing not to work full-time. You'll have direct access to the CEO and Chairman, real autonomy over the finance function, and a schedule built to match.
