Calderdale Council is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced individual to join our dynamic Public Health team as a Schools Road Safety Manager. This is a key role in maximising the benefit of the journey to school; ensuring the journey is as safe as possible, increasing physical activity, and maximising environmental sustainability.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled and proactive individual to lead the provision of support to schools including management of the Calderdale School Crossing Patrol (SCP) Service.
The successful candidate will be the first point of contact for schools with regards to road safety and will build strong relationships with schools and road safety colleagues within the Council. You will be able to respond to queries, incidents, and complaints effectively.
The role involves working closely with schools and partners to promote road safety and active travel, delivering engagement programmes and addressing barriers to safer journeys.
The successful candidate will identify and support opportunities to enhance the health and wellbeing of school children, parents and staff in their journeys to school, including through the design and delivery of an evidence-based and effective road safety programme aimed at promoting safe, active travel. They will support schools to deliver road safety within the curriculum.
Using data and insight, you will contribute to road safety initiatives, advise on improvements around schools, and support relevant wider Council strategies.
The postholder will contribute to ensuring that statutory and discretionary road safety duties are met; safeguarding school children, pedestrians, and vulnerable road users through education, engineering liaison, and enforcement partnerships.
The postholder will lead and manage the School Crossing Patrol (SCP) Service, ensuring safe, reliable, and legally compliant operations across all patrol sites. You will oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and wellbeing of SCP staff, maintaining high service standards through regular supervision and development. You will maintain accurate records on electronic systems; and ensure the provision of relief patrols as and when required. You will manage, promote and grow the traded SCP service, including service-level agreements, financial processes, and performance reporting.
This is a varied role combining operational management, stakeholder engagement, financial oversight, and public health-focused transport initiatives.
We are seeking someone who is organised, adaptable and committed to providing a high-quality service. You will bring experience and confidence in managing a team and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
The successful candidate will have:
GCSE English grade C/4 or above or demonstratable experience
Hold a full UK driving licence;
o and have access to a vehicle for work purpose

Proven experience using Microsoft Office and IT systems
They will be a highly organised, resilient, and adaptable individual with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, able to effectively motivate and support a team while meeting deadlines and managing competing priorities.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, with experience in customer-focused roles and the ability to build positive working relationships. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail are essential, including the ability to maintain accurate records and use IT systems confidently (including Microsoft Office and data/reporting tools).
You will have experience in managing risk and a strong commitment to health and safety, equality and diversity, and safeguarding. A proactive, independent approach is key, alongside the ability to analyse data and use evidence to inform decisions.
Experience in leading teams and delivering or coordinating programmes related to road safety, transport, education, or public health will be highly valued.
