Location: Trowbridge, Wiltshire
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Hours: 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: £12.71 - £13.00 per hour
About Us
Established in 1958, Knees Engineering is a family-owned sheet metal fabrication engineering specialist. Operating out of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, we pride ourselves on precision, quality, and a collaborative workshop culture. To support our steady growth and strict Factory Production Control (FPC) standards, we are seeking a hands-on, organized, and proactive individual to join our logistics and stores team.
Role Overview
The Driver and Operations Support role (functioning as our Assistant Storeman & Driver) is a multi-faceted, active position split between our two Trowbridge sites and operating the company van. Reporting directly to the Dispatch and Quality Manager, you will be the vital link that keeps materials flowing smoothly between our two production sites and to our local and national customers. Your day-to-day work ensures our kitting areas and welding bays are constantly supplied, organised, and running efficiently.
Core Responsibilities
- Cross-Site Logistics & Shuttling:
- Execute daily scheduled runs between our Trowbridge sites to transfer part-finished goods, fabrication profiles, and components.
- Work closely with the kitting team to transport complete kits of parts safely alongside their engineering drawing packs.
- Conduct daily safety and compliance checks on the shared company van.
- Stores & Workshop Support:
- Assist with unloading raw materials and loading outgoing delivery vehicles using counterbalance forklifts and safe manual handling techniques.
- Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free dispatch zones, warehouse racking, and loading bays.
- Assist the dispatch team with packing - including wrapping, strapping pallets, and ensuring clear routing labels are attached to completed jobs.
- Quality Control Awareness:
- Act as a final line of defence by performing basic visual checks during loading and transit to spot obvious defects or transit damage.
- Assist management in moving non-conforming or uncertified incoming deliveries safely into the designated quarantine area.
Candidate Requirements
- Licence & Driving Experience: A valid, clean UK Driving Licence (Category B) with proven experience confidently driving commercial transit-style vans is essential.
- Forklift Capability: A valid Counterbalance Forklift licence is highly preferred (subject to a standard internal on-site assessment).
- Physical Fitness: Ability to comfortably handle the physical demands of an active workshop, loading bay, and manual handling practices.
- Key Attributes: High attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and a proactive attitude toward warehouse safety and housekeeping.
- Industrial Familiarity: Previous experience working in a busy sheet metal fabrication, engineering, or structural workshop environment is advantageous.
What We Offer
- 20 days annual leave + bank holidays.
- Secure, long-term employment within an established family business.
- Company pension scheme.
