Support Worker – Supported Living and Community, Greater Manchester
£13.45 – £15.50 per hour
Support Health Care supports adults with learning disabilities, autism, mental ill health and other complex needs to live in their own homes rather than in institutional settings. We work across Greater Manchester, with services in Salford, Oldham and Manchester, and our office in Failsworth.
Every service you would work in is staffed around the clock. Some of the people we support share a house with one or two others, some live on their own with a full-time team, and some need two staff on shift at all times. You would work across a small number of these houses rather than a different one every week, and you would support people both at home and out in the community - because a 24/7 service is not one where somebody sits indoors all day.
We are recruiting because our services are growing, not because people keep leaving. We will tell you who you are working with before you start, and we will not send you into a house you have never been to without a proper handover.
What the work involves
- Supporting people with everyday life at home - cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, managing money, keeping on top of appointments
- Personal care where it is needed, delivered with dignity and on the person's terms wherever possible
- Getting out and doing things: college, work, groups, the gym, family visits, or just a walk and a coffee
- Overnight cover, which means being awake, alert and available, not asleep on the sofa
- Following each person's support plan and positive behaviour support approach, and adapting to the fact that no two of them are the same
- Administering and recording medication accurately
- Recording on RoundSys the same day, honestly, including the shifts that did not go well
- Recognising and reporting safeguarding concerns without waiting to be sure
- Full handovers at the start and end of every shift — in a round-the-clock service, that is the single most important thing you do
Shifts
- Long days 08:00 - 20:00
- Waking nights 20:00 - 08:00
- Sleep-in shifts at some services
- Full-time and part-time contracts available, including night-only and weekend-only patterns
- Rotas are published in advance and we do not change them at short notice without asking you first
What we offer
- A permanent contract with guaranteed hours, not zero-hours bank work

- Full training: Care Certificate, safeguarding, autism and trauma-informed practice, the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice on Learning Disability and Autism, medication, moving and handling, first aid, and de-escalation
- Regular supervision from a named manager, not a phone number you never get through to
- Support towards the Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care
- 24/7 on-call from people who know the services and know the people we support
What we need from you
- Right to work in the UK. We are not able to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
- An enhanced DBS check. We will arrange and pay for this.
- At least 6 months' paid experience in support work, care or a related setting. If you have the right attitude and no experience, tell us anyway - we do recruit that way, but not for every service.
- Reliability above everything else. In a 24/7 service, a no-show is not an inconvenience, it leaves a colleague unable to go home and somebody without the cover they are entitled to.
- The temperament for it: calm when things escalate, consistent when they don't, and honest in your recording either way
- Two satisfactory references covering your most recent employment
- A driving licence is an advantage for supporting people to get out and about, but it is not essential
What we will not do
We will not put you on shift with someone you have never met and no handover. We will not ask you to do anything you have not been trained for. And we will not describe the work as easier than it is - some of the people we support have had a rough time of it and will test whether you are going to stick around.
