Bench Joiner / Wood Machinist
Dornoch, Scottish Highlands
£30,000–£37,000 depending on experience
Treecraft Woodwork is a specialist manufacturer of bespoke windows, doors and high-quality joinery, based in Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands.
We’re trusted with some of Scotland’s most important buildings — Highland castles, National Trust for Scotland properties such as Canna House, work on St Kilda, and other listed and historic sites across the country.
We’re looking for a skilled and conscientious Bench Joiner / Wood Machinist to join our workshop team, combining modern CNC technology with traditional woodworking and joinery skills.
The role
Every project we make is different. You’ll be working with quality timber to manufacture bespoke windows, doors and specialist joinery items — from staircases to bespoke furniture — taking projects from initial machining through to finished components and assembly, entirely within our workshop.
Depending on your experience, your role may include:
- Setting up and operating woodworking machinery
- Preparing and machining components for windows, doors, staircases and other bespoke joinery
- Traditional bench joinery and assembly
- Working from drawings and specifications to tight tolerances
- Checking your own work for quality and accuracy
- Working as part of a small, skilled workshop team
You won’t be spending your days producing hundreds of identical units, and this isn’t a site-based role — our work is bespoke, varied, workshop-based, and often technically challenging.
Who we’re looking for
Above all, we need someone who takes ownership of their work — you’ll often be trusted to run your own section of a job without someone checking in constantly.
You should also have:
- A solid background in joinery, woodworking, machining or the timber trade
- Good practical skills and attention to detail
- The ability to work accurately from drawings and measurements
- A reliable, positive approach and the ability to work well within a small team
- A willingness to learn and develop new skills
If you have the right skills, attitude and work ethic, we’ll help you develop the specialist knowledge required for our work — including training and progression into CNC operation as your experience grows.
What we offer
- £30,000–£37,000 depending on experience. This reflects the typical range for the role — exceptional experience may be considered outside this on a case-by-case basis.
- Annual salary review
- 29 days’ holiday
- Optional overtime typically available
- Full-time, permanent position, with the possibility of a compressed four-day week by agreement for the right candidate
- Genuinely varied work rather than repetitive production — windows and doors, staircases, and bespoke joinery and furniture
- The opportunity to work on Highland castles, historic estates, and heritage projects
- A modern workshop combining CNC technology with traditional craftsmanship
- A skilled, close-knit team
Why Treecraft?
We’re a small specialist manufacturer, not a high-volume production factory. Our work is found in some of Scotland’s most interesting buildings and locations — from bespoke windows and staircases to fine furniture.
Projects can involve reproducing historic details, solving unusual technical problems, and producing joinery that has to look right and last for generations.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills while working alongside experienced craftsmen and modern CNC equipment.
Based in Dornoch
Dornoch offers a very different lifestyle from working in a city or large industrial centre.
We’re based in the Scottish Highlands, close to the coast, beaches and mountains, with Inverness around an hour away.
For someone looking for a change of pace — without giving up the opportunity to work in a specialist, ambitious workshop — it can be an excellent place to build both a career and a life.
