Role Overview
As a Carbon Surveyor, you will be responsible for visiting commercial properties across the UK to assess their energy usage, identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, and recommend practical energy-efficiency improvements.
The role involves a combination of on-site surveying, data collection, energy analysis and client engagement, helping businesses understand their current carbon footprint and develop realistic routes towards Net Zero.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site carbon and energy surveys across commercial properties.
- Inspect and record gas and electricity meters, energy-consuming equipment and building services.
- Collect accurate information relating to energy consumption, building usage and operational practices.
- Assess opportunities for energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
- Identify potential opportunities for solar PV and other renewable technologies.
- Review heating, lighting, HVAC and other major energy-consuming systems.
- Assess waste management and recycling practices and identify areas for improvement.
- Take photographs, meter readings and relevant site measurements.
- Analyse collected data and contribute to carbon footprint calculations.
- Produce clear survey reports outlining findings and recommendations.
- Communicate recommendations to clients in a clear and professional manner.
- Support the development of Net Zero and carbon-reduction strategies.
- Ensure all surveys are completed accurately and in accordance with company procedures and UK requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure survey information is submitted within required timescales.
Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- An interest in sustainability, energy and Net Zero.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate data-recording skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently while travelling between sites.
- A professional approach when dealing with commercial clients.
- Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and data-management systems.
- The ability to understand and interpret energy and utility information.
- A full UK driving licence is desirable.
Previous experience in carbon surveying, energy management, sustainability, construction, facilities management or utilities is advantageous, but training can be provided for the right candidate.
Typical Working Environment
The role is predominantly field-based, with regular travel to commercial properties throughout the UK. You may work across offices, warehouses, retail premises, industrial sites and other commercial buildings.

The overall objective of the Carbon Surveyor is to accurately assess how a business uses energy and resources, identify opportunities to reduce costs and carbon emissions, and provide practical recommendations that support the client's journey towards Net Zero.
Pay: £30,000.00-£70,000.00 per year
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Newcastle upon Tyne NE4
