20/30 Labs is a UKAS-accredited contract testing laboratory based in Brackmills, Northampton. We process thousands of water and associated samples every week, testing for organisms including Legionella, Pseudomonas, E. coli, Mycobacteria and other microorganisms.
Our standards are high, and the pace of work is fast. Accuracy, reliability and compliance with laboratory procedures are essential.
The role
We are looking for a reliable and organised Laboratory Technician to support all areas of our laboratory operation, including our Saturday laboratory activities.
This is a varied, hands-on role involving microbiological testing, sample reception and login, media preparation, kit assembly, inventory support and general laboratory duties.
A key part of this position will be receiving, checking and accurately registering samples in our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Main responsibilities
- Receive, unpack and check samples against the accompanying paperwork.
- Accurately register samples and customer information in LIMS.
- Identify and escalate missing, damaged, incorrectly labelled or unsuitable samples.
- Prioritise urgent and time-sensitive samples appropriately.
- Perform membrane filtration of environmental water samples.
- Transfer membranes onto the correct agar plates for incubation.
- Prepare culture media, reagents and other laboratory materials.
- Assemble and prepare customer sampling kits accurately and within required deadlines.
- Label, scan and track samples and plates throughout the laboratory process.
- Support the testing of water, lumened devices and other sample types.
- Follow aseptic techniques and contamination-control procedures.
- Assist with reading, counting and recording microbial colonies when trained and authorised.
- Enter laboratory information and test data accurately.
- Monitor laboratory stock and consumable levels.
- Receive, organise and store laboratory deliveries.
- Safely move laboratory supplies, sampling kits and boxes as part of routine inventory duties.
- Maintain clean, tidy and organised laboratory, sample-reception and storage areas.
- Complete cleaning logs, equipment records and other required documentation.
- Follow laboratory SOPs, health and safety requirements and the Quality Management System.
- Report errors, damaged samples, equipment problems and deviations promptly.
- Perform other reasonable duties required to support the laboratory.
What we are looking for
Essential
- Availability to work Tuesday to Saturday as the regular working pattern.
- Excellent attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
- Good computer skills and confidence entering information into electronic systems.
- Ability to learn and use LIMS.
- Good organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Ability to follow written procedures consistently.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- A responsible and reliable approach to work.
- Ability to work accurately in a busy, fast-paced laboratory.
- Willingness to perform laboratory testing, sample login, kit assembly, cleaning and stock-handling duties.
- Ability to undertake the manual-handling requirements of the role safely, with appropriate training and reasonable adjustments where required.
Desirable
- A BSc or equivalent qualification in microbiology, biomedical science, biology or another relevant scientific subject.
- Previous experience in a microbiology, sample-reception or UKAS-accredited laboratory.
- Experience performing membrane filtration.
- Experience preparing microbiological media.
- Experience registering samples using LIMS.
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques and laboratory quality procedures.
- Full training will be provided for candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, accuracy and willingness to learn.
