VIY - Hiring Skilled Tradespeople
Freelance | Up to £130 - £150/day | Various Locations across Greater London and South region including Luton and Newham
Who We Need: Carpenter/Joiner or Multi traders to join team.
We are seeking an experienced Construction Mentor to guide, support, and coach individuals on our funded Youth and Community Construction Skills projects.
You will have to be confident in teaching your skills. We are looking for someone whose hands-on expertise and professional insight will be vital in helping some of the most vulnerable young people in our society to build confidence, technical skills, and real-world knowledge
The Role:
- To help support VIY community projects
- Mentor and train young people in trade skills
- Help young people work towards City & Guilds accreditation
- Oversee site H&S supporting team and young people
Ideal Candidate:
✅ Hands on Carpentry/Joinery skills, or multi trade experienced/qualifications, site management and H&S experience - with creative approach to projects
✅ Passion for mentoring young people with ability to motivate and support individuals (experience preferred but not essential)
✅ Able to guide, support, and inspire the next generation of tradespeople
✅ Strong communication and interpersonal skills
£130 - £150/day (based on experience & mentoring skills)

Requirements:
VIY is committed to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. This role involves mentoring cohorts 14-24 within live, construction environment. As part of our safer recruitment process all short listed candidates will undergo rigorous vetting. This involved an Enhanced DBS with children and adult barring lists, references, professional verification and employment history review. We do not discriminate in engaging freelance and contract professionals.
✅ DBS check required (organised and paid for by VIY)
✅ Full Clean Driving licence and access to own vehicle required
Responsibilities:
Hands-on trade work + mentoring
Work alongside mentors, youth engagement team and assessors
Support young people in gaining hands on experience in trade skills
Ensure safety & safeguarding policies are followed
