We are seeking a local, dedicated and compassionate Animal Nursing Assistant to join our small, friendly, and fast-paced practice. The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for animal care and welfare, combining practical skills with empathy for both our patients and their owners.
The Mewes vets is proudly independent, and renowned for our one-pet-one-vet policy.
Although we are a small practice, we are extremely busy, so we need someone eager, confident, and highly motivated to thrive in this role. You will be an essential part of our team, supporting our veterinary nurses and surgeons in providing the highest standard of care.
We are seeking applicants:
- With at least 12 months experience of working with animals in a veterinary practice, rescue centre, kennel or cattery, or animal welfare organisation.
- Who have experience of handling pets confidently and safely.
- Who are content with this role, and not aspiring to become an RVN.
The role is a permanent, full time position, 37 hours per week, with no night work, and one in three Saturday mornings.
4 weeks' holiday, plus bank holidays, and a staff discount scheme.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting Vets and Nurses with animal restraint, safely and compassionately.
- Walking, feeding, and cleaning patients and their hospital environment.
- Maintaining accurate patient records, ensuring all information is up-to-date.
- Preparing consulting rooms, hospital, emergency and operating facilities.
- Cleaning, preparing and sterilising instruments and equipment.
- Performing general cleaning, deep cleaning and maintenance.
- Managing laundry.
- Running internal lab samples, and packaging samples going to external laboratories.
- Answering phone calls.
- Supporting the reception team when needed, including booking appointments and processing payments.
- Regular checks of expiry dates on stock, and re-ordering.

- Strong communication skills for interacting effectively with team members.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining excellent attention to detail.
- This is a permanent role, not an apprenticeship; applications for apprenticeships will not be considered.
