Position Summary:
The Mathnasium Lead Instructor is responsible for leading the instructional floor, directing Instructors to ensure all students receive appropriate attention. They coach Instructors on how to improve their instructional abilities and their use of the Mathnasium method, as well as providing exceptional instruction to students. Lead Instructors are capable of effectively balancing leadership and instructional responsibilities.
The Lead Instructor is committed to providing exceptional customer service through an expert approach that is personal and prescriptive, ensuring students are making progress on their binder work, attending to each individual student’s needs. They build students’ confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, the Lead Instructor builds Instructors confidence and self-esteem through successful coaching interactions.
The Lead Instructors are the instructional floor leaders of the Mathnasium centre team and are responsible for the successful facilitation of team teaching.
Lead Instructor Role:
Leadership:
o Lead the instructional floor by facilitating the Team Teaching environment.
o Lead Instructors to ensure all students receive proper attention.
o Manage the centre environment and resolve escalated student progress and behavioural issues.
o Take accountability of ensuring that students are progressing through their session’s
workout plan and Mathnasium Hour.
o Take accountability of the formal check-in and check-out process ensuring all students
get situated appropriately when entering the centre by setting session goals.
o Take accountability of all students completing reflective learning by reflecting on session
goals during the checked-out process.
o Coach and motivate Instructors to become better Instructors and help them master how
to use the Mathnasium Method to help students learn maths.
● Instruction:
o Teach through Mathnasium methodology and terminology, using prescribed teaching practices.
o Ensure Instructors are delivering instruction using the Mathnasium Method, terminology, and methodology.
o Interact with and motivate students during the instructional session.
o Evaluate and document student progress.
o Communicate student needs to the superiors.
o Assist in non-teaching tasks, which may include cleaning, administrative assistance,
curriculum preparation, or other duties as assigned.
Lead Instructor Characteristics:
Instructional Floor Facilitators:
Lead Instructors must be able to effectively facilitate Mathnasium’s Team-Teaching environment on the instructional floor. Lead Instructors must keep an awareness of the instructional floor at all times and direct Instructors to assist students needing attention.
Leaders:
Lead Instructors must be leaders who can motivate and inspire others to achieve top performance through positive reinforcement and helpful coaching. Lead Instructors must be able to create strong relationships with centre staff in order to be effective at leading and coaching. Lead Instructors must be role models on using the Mathnasium Method in providing instruction for students.
Supportive:
Lead Instructors must be a role model and a resource for Instructors to be successful. Lead Instructors must make themselves available to assist and coach subordinates to develop their talent and alleviate any mathematical or behavioural issues.
Accountable:
Lead Instructors must be accountable for students’ session workout plan progress. Lead Instructors must remove learning and/or behavioural obstacles impacting a students’ ability to make progress towards their session’s workout plan. Lead Instructors must make good judgements in difficult situation and be able to resolve student conflicts. Lead Instructors must be passionate in providing maths education and making a difference in student learning.
Lead Instructors should also have the characteristics of an excellent Mathnasium Instructor:
Maths Expert:
Instructors must be passionate about maths and have strong skills through Higher Tier GCSE. Instructors who work with GCSE students should also excel in maths through A-level or beyond. Instructors must be willing to successfully complete training and apply new pedagogy to teach the Mathnasium Way.
Engaging:
Instructors must interact well with students and be able to instruct students clearly and concisely. Instructors should be able to inspire students to do well, establish a fun learning environment, and consistently demonstrate enthusiasm in teaching maths. Instructors should be able to build strong relationships with students in order to keep them engaged with their work.
Facilitator:
Instructors must move easily from one student to another and be able to keep track of multiple instructional lessons that happen concurrently. Instructors must be able to evaluate and document progress in order to facilitate student learning. Instructors must be able correct work and provide students with constructive feedback usingpositive reinforcement techniques that bolster confidence with maths.
Professional:
Instructors must interact with parents, students, and co-workers in a friendly but professional manner at all times and establish a high level of confidence and programme value with Mathnasium families. Instructors must be a rolemodel for students, demonstrating the capabilities and competence that maths can bring.
Lead Instructor Tasks Performed:
*In addition to the tasks performed of an excellent Mathnasium Instructor, Mathnasium Lead Instructors are responsible for the following:
● Be a role model for Instructors in how to teach using the Mathnasium Method
● Coach Instructors on teaching the Mathnasium way using language and mathematical concepts,instructional icons and rules of engagement
● Assist fellow Instructors by modelling teaching mathematical concepts to students
● Identify activities for students to engage in and to reinforce a student’s workout plan
● Monitor every child to ensure that they are progressing through their workout plan
● Ensure every student is properly checked-in and having appropriate work assigned to them
● Ensure appropriate homework problems are identified at check-in for students and suitable time allocated.
● Ensure each student is progressing through the Mathnasium hour by referencing their session start time.
● Ensure each student is properly checked-out promptly ready for collection.
● Ensure learning reflections are completed with every student at the end of their session
● Balance instructional responsibilities with team facilitation responsibilities to ensure the
instructional floor is working at the highest efficiency
● Facilitate a Team-Teaching environment
● Ensure Instructors are monitoring students’ progress throughout the Mathnasium hour
● Demonstrate good judgement (such as directing Instructors) in stressful situations (such as
multiple students in need of attention)
● Effectively manage the instructional floor by leading Instructors in teaching and assisting all students throughout their respective Mathnasium hour
● Work with Instructors to ensure children are making progress in their workout plan
● Redirect instructional staff to re-engage distracted students or students needing attention
● Redirect instructors to training or administrative tasks in response to changes in student
numbers.
● Resolve student progress issues escalated by Instructors
● Resolve student behavioural problems escalated by Instructors
● Escalate behavioural or progress issues to the Centre Manager for timely resolution
● Reassign student seating where necessary to ensure students’ progress through their workout plan
● Administer and evaluate assessments to current students
● Participate in the delivery of staff meetings
Additional Responsibilities:
In addition to conducting all the tasks and maintaining all the competencies of the Lead Instructor position, Lead Instructors are required to have knowledge and be competent on all the tasks and competencies of the Instructor position. These tasks and competencies can be found in the Instructor
Pay: £12.71-£15.00 per hour
