As Health & Safety Manager, you will be responsible for managing and continuously improving the company's health and safety systems across construction sites, offices, subcontractors and supply-chain activities.
You will work closely with Directors, Project Managers, Site Managers, subcontractors and employees to ensure that health and safety is embedded into every stage of our projects, from pre-construction through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and maintain the company's health and safety policies, procedures and management systems.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations and industry best practice.
- Provide professional health and safety advice and guidance to Directors, Project Managers and Site Management teams.
- Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety tours, identifying hazards and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Review and approve risk assessments, method statements and construction phase plans.
- Support the preparation and review of project-specific health and safety documentation.
- Monitor the performance of subcontractors and ensure they meet the company's health and safety standards.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences, identifying root causes and implementing preventative measures.
- Maintain accurate health and safety records, reports and statistics.
- Deliver health and safety inductions, toolbox talks and training where required.
- Promote a positive safety culture and encourage employees and subcontractors to take ownership of health and safety.
- Keep up to date with changes to legislation, guidance and construction industry best practice.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, principal contractors, regulatory bodies and other external stakeholders where required.
- Support the development of emergency procedures and ensure appropriate arrangements are in place across projects.
- Monitor occupational health risks, including dust, noise, vibration, manual handling and exposure to hazardous substances.
- Ensure appropriate welfare facilities and site standards are maintained.
- Provide regular management reports on health and safety performance, trends, incidents and areas for improvement.
- Assist with pre-construction planning and ensure health and safety considerations are incorporated into project design and delivery.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen the company's overall health and safety performance.
About You
We are looking for a confident and practical Health & Safety professional who can operate effectively both on site and at management level.
You will ideally have:
- Proven experience in a health and safety role within the construction industry.
- Experience working on new-build construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of UK construction health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Relevant health and safety qualification, such as NEBOSH National General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent.
- Membership of a recognised professional body such as IOSH or equivalent is desirable.
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment, method statements, incident investigation and site auditing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices and drive improvements.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach rather than simply identifying problems.
- Strong organisational and report-writing skills.
- The ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities.
- A full UK driving licence is desirable due to travel between construction sites.
