Part-Time Assistant Manager– The White Lion, Bourton, Gillingham (Dorset)
Salary:£22,000 (plus tips)
Working Pattern:
- 6 days over a fortnight
- Week 1: 2 weekdays (no weekend working)
- Week 2: 4 days including the weekend
- Every other weekend off
Contract: Permanent
Start Date: Flexible – ideally within the next 1–3 months
The White Lion is a well-established, food-led village pub in Bourton, Dorset, serving a mix of loyal locals and visitors. We are seeking an experienced Part-Time Assistant/General Manager to take operational responsibility for the pub on a clearly defined, sustainable part-time basis.
This role has been intentionally structured to provide genuine work–life balance, with clear boundaries and active owner support. ***Please note – this role does not provide accommodation***
The Role
As Part-Time Assistant/General Manager, you will be responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the pub during your working days, with a focus on people, standards and service.
Key responsibilities include:
· Overseeing daily operations and maintaining consistently high service standards
· Leading, motivating and developing front-of-house and kitchen teams
· Creating rotas and managing staffing levels and labour costs during your working days
· Managing stock control, ordering and supplier relationships
· Creating, organising and managing pub events, including community, seasonal and entertainment-led events
· Driving sales, guest satisfaction and repeat business
· Ensuring compliance with licensing, health & safety and food hygiene requirements
· Acting as the face of the pub within the local community
· Ad-hoc duties
Role Boundaries & Owner Support
To ensure the role remains genuinely part-time and manageable:
· The owner covers the pub on your non-working days
· Payroll management and final financial approval remain with the owner
· Emergency issues are shared, with no expectation to be routinely on call when not working
· Strategic oversight and wider business decisions sit with the owner but would welcome your input
· These boundaries are a deliberate and important part of how the role operates.
About You
This role would suit:
- An experienced Assistant/General Manager seeking reduced hours, or
- A strong Deputy / Assistant Manager ready to step up with support
You will ideally have:
- Experience in food-led pub or hospitality operations
- Strong leadership and people-management skills
- Experience planning and delivering events
- Good commercial awareness around costs and margins
- A calm, organised and practical approach
Village or community pub experience would be an advantage.
