I’d add FleetCheck, WhatsApp communications, defect reporting, load security, stall set-up/breakdown, stock accountability, return of unsold produce/equipment, and the expectation that drivers represent Ted’s Veg professionally at the markets. I’d avoid putting vehicle-damage liability in the advert itself; that is better dealt with in the employment/driver policy.
Weekend Farmers Market Driver – Saturdays & Sundays
Location: Based from Ted’s Veg, Unit 17, Uplands Business Park, Walthamstow, E17 5QJ
Working Hours: Approximately 6:00am–6:00pm
Days: Saturdays and/or Sundays
Pay: Approximately £140–£150 per day
About the Role
Ted’s Veg is looking for a dedicated, reliable and friendly Weekend Farmers Market Driver / Market Trader to join our team.
This is not simply a driving role. You will be responsible for transporting fresh fruit and vegetables from our Walthamstow unit to farmers markets across London, setting up and operating the market stall alongside another member of the team, serving customers throughout the day and returning the vehicle, stock and equipment safely at the end of trading.
The role is physically demanding and involves driving, heavy lifting, working outdoors and dealing directly with the public. A good knowledge of fruit and vegetables is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely drive a Ted’s Veg vehicle from our Walthamstow unit to farmers markets across London.
- Complete the required vehicle safety checks using FleetCheck before starting the journey.
- Report any vehicle defects, warning lights, damage or mechanical concerns immediately.
- Ensure the vehicle is safe, clean, fuelled and suitable for the day's work.
- Make sure produce, equipment, tables and other market stock are safely and securely loaded before travelling.
- Transport fruit, vegetables and market equipment safely and efficiently.
- Arrive at the allocated farmers market on time and ready for set-up.
- Assist with unloading pallets, crates and individual boxes of produce by hand.
- Set up the Ted’s Veg market stall, tables, displays and equipment ready for trading.
- Work alongside another market colleague throughout the trading day.
- Maintain an attractive, clean, well-stocked and professional market display.
- Regularly replenish produce and rotate stock throughout the day.
- Check produce quality and remove anything that is no longer suitable for sale.
- Provide friendly and knowledgeable customer service.
- Answer customer questions about fruit, vegetables, seasonality, quality and products where possible.
- Process card payments using a smartphone and the SumUp card payment system.
- Maintain accurate handling of stock and payments throughout the trading day.
- Communicate with the Ted’s Veg team through our WhatsApp groups, including updates on arrival, stock requirements, operational issues or anything requiring management attention.
- Communicate professionally with farmers market managers and other traders.
- Follow instructions from market management relating to vehicle movements, set-up, trading and pack-down.
- Keep the market pitch tidy and free from unnecessary waste, cardboard and trip hazards.
- Follow Ted’s Veg food safety, hygiene, manual handling and health & safety procedures.
- Ensure produce is handled, displayed and stored appropriately throughout the day.
- Comply with all road traffic laws and drive responsibly at all times.
- Take particular care when manoeuvring long-wheelbase vans in busy markets, loading areas and pedestrianised locations.
- At the end of trading, pack down the stall and safely reload all remaining produce, trays, tables and equipment.
- Return unsold stock, reusable trays and market equipment to the Walthamstow unit as instructed.
- Leave the vehicle clean, tidy and ready for its next use.
- Report any accidents, vehicle damage, stock issues, customer complaints or incidents immediately.
Requirements
The successful applicant should:
- Hold a full valid UK driving licence.
- Ideally have a clean driving licence or minimal endorsements.
- Be confident driving vans in London, including busy and restricted areas.
- Previous long-wheelbase van driving experience is highly desirable.
- Be physically fit and comfortable with repeated heavy lifting, loading and unloading.
- Be comfortable working long days and spending extended periods standing.
- Be prepared to work outside throughout the year in varying weather conditions.
- Understand that farmers markets normally continue trading unless conditions are deemed unsafe by the market manager.
- Be punctual and reliable — early starts and market arrival times are essential.
- Have good communication skills.
- Be friendly, approachable and confident dealing with members of the public.
- Be able to work independently while also working effectively with a market colleague.
- Have good knowledge of fruit and vegetables, including product identification and basic quality assessment.
- Previous experience within the fruit & vegetable, fresh produce, market trading, hospitality or retail sectors would be advantageous.
- Own and be comfortable using a smartphone.
- Be comfortable using WhatsApp for operational communication.
- Be comfortable using apps including FleetCheck and SumUp.
- Have an awareness of manual handling and safe working practices.
- Take pride in vehicle cleanliness, market presentation and the Ted’s Veg brand.
- Be available to work Saturdays and/or Sundays, approximately 6:00am–6:00pm.
What We're Looking For
Reliability is particularly important in this position. Farmers markets operate to fixed opening times, meaning the vehicle, produce and team must arrive on time.
We are looking for someone who is happy to take responsibility for their vehicle and market, communicates clearly when there is a problem and is comfortable getting involved with every part of the day — from loading the van first thing in the morning to selling vegetables, speaking with customers and packing everything away at the end of trading.
This is an active, hands-on role and would suit somebody who enjoys driving, fresh produce, working outdoors and interacting with the public.
Pay
The position currently offers approximately £140–£150 per day, depending on experience and the market worked.
Payment arrangements will be confirmed with successful applicants.
How to Apply
If you are reliable, confident behind the wheel and enjoy working with fresh produce and the general public, we would like to hear from you.
Please apply with your CV, along with a short description of any relevant driving, market trading, retail, hospitality or fruit and vegetable experience.
Please also include details of:
- Your driving experience.

- Your experience with fruit and vegetables.
- Your availability on Saturdays and Sundays.
