Experienced Convenience Store / Newsagent Retail Assistant
Full-Time | South Croydon | £12.75–£18.00 per hour | Career Progression
EXPERIENCED CONVENIENCE RETAIL STAFF WANTED
We are looking for an experienced, hardworking and reliable Convenience Store / Newsagent Retail Assistant to join our busy store in South Croydon.
Previous experience working in a convenience store, newsagent, off-licence, supermarket, petrol station shop or similar fast-paced retail environment is essential.
This is not an entry-level position. We are specifically looking for people who already understand how a busy convenience store operates.
If you are confident on a till, know how to serve customers quickly, can handle deliveries and stock properly, and understand that there is always something to be done in a busy shop, we want to hear from you.
What We Offer
We want to build a strong, long-term team and reward people who perform.
Starting pay is £12.75 per hour during the initial training and probationary period.
Following successful training, your hourly rate can increase based on your experience, performance, reliability, initiative and level of responsibility.
Pay progression is available up to £18.00 per hour for exceptional employees who consistently perform at a high level and take on greater responsibility.
There are also genuine opportunities to progress into positions such as:
- Senior Retail Assistant
- Keyholder
- Supervisor
- Assistant Manager
- Store Manager
We want people who work hard, learn quickly and become increasingly valuable to the business. As your ability and responsibility increase, so can your earnings and position within the company.
The Role
This is a hands-on convenience retail position.
You will be expected to confidently manage different responsibilities throughout your shift, including:
- Serving customers quickly, professionally and accurately
- Operating the till/EPOS system confidently
- Handling cash and card transactions
- Receiving and checking deliveries
- Lifting and moving boxes
- Putting deliveries away quickly and correctly
- Replenishing shelves throughout the day
- Rotating stock and checking expiry dates
- Maintaining correct pricing
- Setting up and maintaining promotional displays
- Facing-up and merchandising shelves
- Keeping fridges and displays fully stocked
- Maintaining a clean and organised shop and stockroom
- Assisting with stock counts
- Helping customers locate products
- Handling age-restricted products responsibly
- Remaining calm and efficient during busy periods
- Working independently and using your own initiative
You must be comfortable switching between serving customers and working stock.
If a delivery arrives while the shop is busy, both still need dealing with.
If the shop becomes quiet, we expect you to recognise what needs doing rather than standing behind the till waiting to be given another task.
Experience Is Essential
We are particularly interested in applicants who have previously worked in:
Convenience Stores | Newsagents | Off-Licences | Independent Grocery Stores | Supermarkets | Petrol Station Shops | High-Volume Retail
Experience with any of the following would be particularly useful:
National Lottery | PayPoint/Payzone | Oyster | Newspapers & Magazines | Parcel Services | Tobacco | Vape Products | Age-Restricted Sales | Grocery | Chilled & Frozen Products
You do not need experience with every system we operate. We can train you on our particular systems and procedures.
However, we do expect you to already understand the fundamentals of working properly in a busy retail environment.
The Person We Want
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in convenience or similar retail
- Confident and accurate on a till
- Fast and efficient without becoming careless
- Reliable and punctual
- Friendly and confident with customers
- Comfortable receiving and putting away deliveries
- Physically capable of lifting and moving stock
- Organised and tidy
- Comfortable working under pressure
- Able to multitask
- Commercially aware
- Willing to learn new products and systems
- Comfortable taking responsibility
- Capable of working without constant supervision
- Looking for stable, long-term employment
Most importantly, we want someone with initiative.
A good member of our team doesn't walk past an empty shelf, untidy display or delivery waiting to be put away because nobody specifically told them to deal with it.
They see what needs doing and get on with it.
Hours & Availability – PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING
This is a FULL-TIME position.
Our store operates:
7 DAYS A WEEK
5:30AM – 10:00PM
Applicants must therefore have genuine flexibility to work different shifts anywhere within these operating hours, according to the rota and requirements of the business.
Your shifts may include:
- Early-morning starts from 5:30am
- Daytime shifts
- Evening shifts finishing at 10:00pm
- Saturdays
- Sundays
- Bank holidays
This does not mean you will work from 5:30am until 10:00pm. It means that your scheduled working shifts can fall anywhere within the store's operating hours.
Please do not apply if you are only available Monday–Friday, only available during the daytime, cannot work weekends, or cannot reliably attend early-morning or evening shifts.
Because some shifts can start at 5:30am or finish at 10:00pm, please check your transport arrangements carefully before applying.
Reliable attendance and flexibility are essential for this position.
Location
The Zebra Shop

We would strongly prefer applicants who live within a sensible travelling distance of South Croydon. A long or unreliable commute is unlikely to work for this position, particularly with our early and late shifts.
Before Applying

We are looking for experienced staff, not simply somebody looking for any available job.
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a pre-interview questionnaire before being invited for interview.
If you already understand convenience retail, are confident on a till, can work quickly under pressure, don't mind getting stuck into deliveries and stock, and want a long-term position where good performance can lead to better pay and greater responsibility, we would like to hear from you.
