Post: Experienced SHEQ Advisor - Waste Management Industry

Hours: 37 hours
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday 08:30-17:00 (16:30 on Friday)
We have a role available for a proactive SHEQ professional who has high standards; experience in developing Management Systems, driving continuous improvement and playing a key role in risk reduction, environmental improvements and delivering quality assurance.
Purpose of the role:
To support the Group H&S Manager in delivering, maintaining and continually improving the company’s Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) strategy across the business.
This is an active, site-facing role requiring regular visibility across operational locations to understand workplace risks, support managers and employees, complete audits and inspections, capture data, close actions and drive continual improvement.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
SHEQ Management Systems and Assurance
- Support the implementation and continual improvement of the integrated management system, including ISO 9001, ISO 4001 and ISO 45001 requirements.
- Plan and complete internal audits, site inspections, job safety monitoring and compliance checks in line with agreed schedules.
- Record audit findings, non-conformances, observations and opportunities for improvement clearly and accurately
- Track corrective actions arising from audits, inspections, incidents, complaints and management reviews, verifying effective close-out within agreed timescales.
Support the review and control of the documented information, including policies, procedures, forms, work instructions, toolbox talks and SHEQ records.
- Maintain a visible site presence across company operations, aiming to spend a minimum of three days per week out of the office.
Health & Safety
- Provide practical health and safety advice to managers, supervisors, operatives and drivers across company sites and customer locations
- Support the development and review of risk assessments, safe systems of work and operational controls for waste management activities
- Support site and area managers with accident, incident, near-miss and hazard investigations with particular focus on HWRC, transport, vehicle movement and operational waste-related incidents.
- Monitor incident trends and support risk reduction initiatives to improve operational performance and reduce recurrence.
- Promote a positive health and safety culture through coaching, engagement, challenge and visible leadership.
- Support the delivery of health and safety training, briefings and awareness campaigns as required.
Quality Management – ISO 9001
- Assist with the investigation and close-out of quality non-conformances, audit findings, service failures and customer complaints
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action planning to prevent recurrence and improve process effectiveness
- Monitor quality-related actions, trends and KPIs, escalating overdue or ineffective actions where required
- Support operational teams in improving consistency, compliance, customer satisfaction and right first-time performance
- Assist with the review of customer, supplier and contractor performance where quality or SHEQ input is required
- Contribute quality performance information to management reviews, including risks, opportunities, objectives and improvement actions
Environmental Management – ISO 14001
- Assist with the identification, review and monitoring of environmental aspects and impacts across company operations
- Support the completion and review of environmental risk assessments for waste storage, handling, transfer, treatment, transport and site activities
- Assist with the investigation and close-out of environmental incidents, complaints, near misses and non-conformances
- Monitor and support controls relating to waste storage, drainage, spill prevention, dust, odour, noise, fire prevention, housekeeping, and pollution prevention
- Assist with monitoring environmental objectives, targets, KPIs, compliance obligations and improvement actions.
Qualifications/Experience
Essential:
- NEBOSH General or equivalent
- Tech IOSH or equivalent professional membership
- Experience of incident management and investigation
- Experience of completing audits, inspections or compliance checks
- Experience supporting risk assessment, procedures and safe systems of work
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook etc.)
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
- NEBOSH Diploma/NVQ Level 6 or working towards
- Cert IOSH (or higher)
- ISO 9001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification
- ISO 14001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification
- ISO 45001 Internal Auditor qualification
- IEMA environmental qualification or environmental awareness training
- Experience supporting environmental risk assessments, aspects and impact assessment or environmental compliance audits
- Background or experience in higher-risk work areas such as Hazardous Waste, recycling, transfer stations, HWRCs, transport or facilities management
