Optical Assistant – Pre-Test & Diagnostic Services
Role Purpose
To support the delivery of outstanding customer care through the effective operation of the Pre-Test and Diagnostic Services area. The role focuses on carrying out pre-screening procedures, assisting with advanced diagnostic testing, supporting the clinical team, and ensuring every customer receives a professional, efficient and welcoming experience.
As a key member of the store team, you will help maintain high clinical standards, support store performance, and contribute to a positive customer journey from arrival through to consultation.
Principal Accountabilities Customer Care & Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service at every stage of the customer journey.
- Welcome customers professionally and create a positive first impression.
- Support customers through the pre-test process, ensuring they understand each assessment being completed.
- Identify customer needs and provide assistance confidently and professionally.
- Ensure customer needs are met at every opportunity.
- Achieve excellent customer feedback through outstanding service.
- Handle customer questions and concerns effectively, escalating where appropriate.
- Be an ambassador for the Specsavers brand at all times.
Pre-Test & Diagnostics
- Carry out pre-screening procedures accurately and efficiently.
- Operate diagnostic equipment in accordance with store procedures and training.
- Perform assessments including:
- Autorefractor measurements
- Non-contact tonometry
- Visual field screening
- OCT scanning
- Retinal imaging
- Other enhanced optical services as required
- Ensure all diagnostic information is recorded accurately and is ready for the Optometrist.
- Recognise when results or observations require immediate escalation to the clinical team.
- Support the delivery of enhanced optical services and clinical initiatives.
- Assist with maintaining and preparing clinical equipment to ensure it remains clean, operational and compliant.
- Maintain accurate patient records in accordance with company and NHS requirements.
Administration & Operational Excellence
- Book, amend and manage customer appointments using in-store systems.
- Ensure patient records and customer documentation are completed accurately.
- Operate the till effectively and accurately when required.
- Support the store in achieving key performance indicators.
- Demonstrate awareness of cost control and efficient use of resources.
- Maintain a clean, organised and welcoming diagnostic environment.
- Contribute positively to team performance and store profitability.
- Meet and exceed individual and team objectives.

Essential Skills
- Customer service experience, ideally within a retail, healthcare or service environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- A willingness to learn new clinical skills and diagnostic procedures.
- Confidence using computer systems and technology.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working in an optical practice.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge of NHS optical services.
- Experience supporting customers in a healthcare environment.
