Main purpose
The role of a driver is to transport and assist children with special educational needs to and from school safely. A driver in this position will normally work split shifts (e.g. morning and afternoon), timetabled around school start and finish times. We guarantee a minimum of 20 hours per week of work on a regular school contract. Due to vehicle insurance requirements, applicants must be 21 years of age or older and hold a full clean UK driving licence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To be responsible for the care and conduct of pupils being transported to and from school.
- To assist children in boarding vehicles, disembarking only where appropriate and where required.
- To ensure the correct handover of pupils when they arrive at their destinations.
- To report any problems, incidents, or unusual occurrences at the first opportunity to the Pastoral Team.
- To ensure that personal property in possession of the children is both safely secured and transported with the individual when necessary.
- To maintain an accurate register of passengers being transported, confidentially managing information such as names, telephone numbers, and addresses together with a record of attendance.
- To accurately observe the timetables implemented by VASE Academy to ensure the punctual transportation of passengers.
- To be able to work with children who may present challenging behaviour.
- To promptly communicate any accidents, vehicle damage, or offences under the Road Traffic Acts to the Transport Manager.
- To carry out assessments of your vehicle, reporting any faults to the Transport Manager.
- To oversee adequate vehicle maintenance and hygiene.
- Being attentive to traffic and weather conditions and ensuring passenger safety.
- Following the planned route and schedule for departure times and stops.
- Regularly checking vehicle safety such as tyres, brakes, turn signals, mechanical equipment, etc.
- Monitoring and reporting fuel consumption, mileage, and passenger numbers.
- Reporting delays, accidents, and emergencies.
- Responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Inspecting the vehicle thoroughly before and after each trip.
- Assisting with the loading and unloading of the bus when required.
- Enforcing conduct and safety rules on the school vehicles.
- Maintaining a clean vehicle.

Qualifications and training
* GCSE educated with Maths and English (Preferred)
* Must be aged 21 or over (due to car insurance requirements)
* Must hold a full clean UK driving licence (Mandatory)
* Category D1 licence (Preferred)
* MiDAS Trained (Preferred)
Experience & Attributes
* Driving: 1 year (preferred)
* Good with children
* Pleasant, patient, and helpful personality
* Totally reliable and trustworthy
* Excellent timekeeping
* Experience working with SEND children (ASD/ADHD and SEMH).
* Ability to communicate with a range of people (i.e. parents, children, and staff)
* Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
* Flexible approach to working arrangements
* Willing to undertake training as necessary
