Apprentice Buyer – Level 3 Procurement Modern Apprenticeship

Location: Cupar, Fife
Job Type: Full-time, 1-year Modern Apprenticeship
Hours: 40 Hours per week

We are looking for an Apprentice Buyer to join our Purchasing team and begin a rewarding career within the construction and engineering industry.

Working within a leading construction, civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering environment, you will gain hands-on experience in purchasing the materials, equipment, plant, services and resources required to deliver our projects.

Alongside your employment, you will complete the Scottish Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in Procurement, based on the SVQ 3 Procurement at SCQF Level 6 (GJ4D 23) framework developed by Skills for Logistics. The framework is specifically designed as an entry and progression route into procurement and supports roles including Assistant Buyer.

No previous procurement experience is required. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, good organisational skills and a genuine interest in developing a career in procurement.

What you’ll learn and do

As an Apprentice Buyer, you’ll work alongside our Purchasing Manager and develop practical skills across the full purchasing process.

Your role will include:

· Supporting our manager with the procurement of construction, civil engineering, mechanical and electrical materials, equipment and services.

· Obtaining and comparing supplier quotations.

· Identifying and researching potential suppliers.

· Raising and placing purchase orders.

· Monitoring and progressing orders and deliveries.

· Communicating with suppliers regarding prices, availability, specifications and lead times.

· Supporting supplier performance reviews.

· Liaising with Project Managers, Engineers, Site Teams and other internal stakeholders.

· Maintaining accurate procurement and supplier records.

· Supporting tendering and sourcing exercises.

· Assisting with contract and supplier administration.

· Developing an understanding of specifications, costs, quality, delivery and value for money.

· Using procurement and business systems.

· Supporting the Procurement team with day-to-day activities and projects.

As your knowledge and confidence develop, you’ll be given increasing responsibility and the opportunity to take ownership of elements of the purchasing process.

Your Level 3 Procurement Modern Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship will combine on-the-job experience with structured learning and assessment.

You will work towards the SVQ 3 Procurement at SCQF Level 6, as specified within the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship framework.

The framework includes five mandatory procurement units covering:

· Analysing information on procurement within the supply chain

· Analysing supplier performance

· Identifying potential suppliers

· Placing orders with suppliers

· Monitoring and progressing the delivery of orders

You will also develop skills in areas such as:

· Supply chain and supplier relationship management.

· Procurement and purchasing processes.

· Project task monitoring.

· Contract administration.

· Supplier capability and specifications.

· Health, safety and security.

· Producing specifications for supplies.

· Business communication.

· Negotiation.

· Managing and improving your own performance.

· Working effectively with others.

Core Skills

The framework also incorporates the following Core Skills at SCQF Level 5:

· Communication

· Numeracy

· Information and Communication Technology

· Problem Solving

· Working with Others

These skills will be developed and demonstrated through your apprenticeship and workplace activities.

Construction and Engineering Focus

As our business operates across construction, civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your procurement training to a real project environment.

You will gain an understanding of how effective procurement contributes to:

· Project delivery.

· Cost control and value for money.

· Material and equipment availability.

· Supplier performance.

· Programme and delivery requirements.

· Quality and specification.

· Supply chain management.

· Health, safety and compliance.

The framework also recognises construction as an industry where specific procurement capability and health and safety considerations can be particularly relevant, providing scope for industry-specific training and development.

Qualifications and experience

Previous procurement, construction or engineering experience is not essential.

The framework allows for flexible entry routes and recognises that academic qualifications are only one way of assessing an apprentice’s suitability.
