Your role:
Help turn data into clear, trusted information that supports decisions across education, work and skills in Greater Manchester.
We are looking for a Data & MI Officer to join the EWS Data & MI Function on a nine-month fixed-term basis. You will work across a varied portfolio of programmes and reporting requirements, helping maintain and improve the dashboards, management information and data-quality processes that support programme teams and senior decision-makers.
A key part of the role will be developing and maintaining Power BI dashboards and reporting datasets, validating and reconciling complex data, and working with stakeholders to turn reporting requirements into clear, usable outputs. You will also contribute to recurring MI and GMS / Integrated Settlement reporting, documentation and quality assurance, and to improvements that reduce manual processing and make reporting more resilient.
This hands-on role offers real ownership of reporting, direct collaboration with programme teams, and the opportunity to improve processes rather than repeat them. As part of a developing directorate-wide function, you’ll work with Adult Skills/ILR, GMIT, and other programme data, build technical expertise, and contribute to enhancing EWS’s use of data and evidence.
About you:
You are an analytical and practical problem-solver who enjoys turning complex data into information that people can understand and use. You will have experience producing management information or analytical outputs from large datasets and practical experience of developing or maintaining Power BI reports or dashboards.
You are comfortable checking data quality, investigating discrepancies and documenting how reports and measures work. Strong Excel and data-handling skills are important, and experience of SQL would be an advantage. Exposure to Python, Microsoft Fabric, ILR or other public-sector data is welcome but is not essential if you can demonstrate the ability and motivation to learn.
Just as importantly, you will be able to work with colleagues to clarify requirements, explain findings clearly and manage competing priorities without losing attention to detail. We are looking for someone who is curious, collaborative and committed to high-quality public service, and who will contribute positively to shared standards and knowledge across the Data & MI Function.
Selection process:
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a short practical data exercise and discuss their approach at interview. The assessment will focus on data quality, analytical reasoning, Power BI / reporting judgement and the ability to explain decisions clearly. Reasonable adjustments will be available where required.
