Maintenance Manager

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the leadership, management, and continuous improvement of all maintenance activities across the galvanizing facility. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of all production equipment, buildings, utilities, and site infrastructure. Working closely with the Operations, Quality, Health & Safety, and Senior Leadership teams, the Maintenance Manager will drive equipment availability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement while maintaining compliance with all statutory and company requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Leadership
· Lead, manage, and develop the site maintenance team, including mechanical, electrical, and contracted personnel.
· Create a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
· Manage workload planning, training, competency development, and succession planning.
· Provide technical leadership and support across all site operations.
Asset Management
· Develop and implement preventative, predictive, and reactive maintenance strategies.
· Ensure maximum equipment reliability and plant availability.
· Maintain all galvanizing process equipment including:
o Galvanizing kettles
o Material handling and lifting equipment
o Cranes and hoists
o Conveyors and transfer systems
o Acid pickling and flux systems
o Boilers and heating systems
o Utilities and compressed air systems
o Electrical distribution systems
o Site infrastructure and buildings
· Monitor equipment performance and implement improvements to reduce downtime.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
· Ensure all maintenance activities comply with relevant health, safety, environmental, and legal requirements.
· Manage permit-to-work systems, isolation procedures, and contractor control processes.
· Lead investigations into maintenance-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
· Support audits and compliance inspections.
Continuous Improvement
· Lead root cause analysis and corrective action processes for equipment failures.
· Drive reliability-centred maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Support capital investment and plant improvement projects.
· Introduce best practices and modern maintenance techniques to improve performance.
Project Management
· Manage maintenance shutdowns and major repair activities.
· Lead plant upgrade and capital expenditure projects.
· Coordinate external contractors and suppliers.
· Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
Skills and Experience Essential
· Proven experience in a Maintenance Manager or Senior Engineering role within heavy manufacturing, steel processing, galvanizing, metals, or industrial environments.
· Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance systems.
· Experience managing multi-skilled maintenance team.
· Demonstrable experience of health and safety leadership.
· Experience managing maintenance budgets and contractors.
· Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
· Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Desirable
· Experience within a steel galvanizing, steel processing, or metal coating environment.
· HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering.
· IOSH Managing Safely.
· Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement knowledge.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
The Maintenance Manager is expected to maintain a visible presence throughout the site and adopt a hands-on leadership approach when supporting maintenance activities, breakdown investigations, plant improvements, and major shutdowns.
The role requires the ability to:
· Regularly walk throughout the production facility, workshops, warehouses, and external yard areas.
· Access and inspect equipment located at height, in confined spaces, and in challenging industrial environments, following all safety procedures.
· Climb ladders, stairs, platforms, and access structures associated with galvanising operations.
· Undertake detailed inspections of machinery, cranes, conveyors, pumps, motors, electrical systems, and process equipment.
· Respond to emergency breakdown situations outside normal working hours when required.
· Work in environments exposed to heat, noise, dust, fumes, and varying weather conditions while wearing the appropriate PPE.
· Occasionally assist with fault finding, equipment testing, plant commissioning, and critical maintenance activities.
· Remain physically capable of carrying out site inspections and supporting maintenance teams during planned shutdowns and major repair projects.
Working Hours and Shift Expectations
The Maintenance Manager will provide leadership and support to a manufacturing operation that may operate on a multi-shift, extended hours, or continuous production basis.
The role requires:
· Flexibility to work across day, evening, night, and weekend shifts as dictated by business and operational requirements.
· Regular interaction with all shift teams to ensure consistent maintenance standards and effective communication across the site.
· Participation in an on-call rota to provide engineering leadership and technical support during plant breakdowns and emergency situations.
· Availability to attend site outside normal working hours during critical equipment failures, planned shutdowns, major maintenance activities, and capital projects.
· Attendance at shift handovers, production meetings, and maintenance planning reviews as required.
· Willingness to alter working patterns periodically to support operational priorities and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Leadership presence during major shutdowns, annual maintenance programmes, and commissioning activities, which may require extended working hours.
Pay: £45,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
