We are seeking an experienced Head of Transport to oversee and coordinate all activities within our transport operations. Reporting to the Transport & Operations Director, the successful candidate will have overall operational responsibility for over 70 drivers and a fleet of around 60 HGV's and 25 trailers.

About the Glenfarg site
The Glenfarg site is the company’s main operating facility from which we operate a modern and diverse waste collection fleet. Our recycling operation has the capacity to handle over 100,000 tonnes of waste per year, processing a range of materials from construction & demolition activities, commercial, industrial and public sector customers. Our constant investment in our fleet and in-house workshop is key to being able to provide compliant and efficient services to our customer base.
Purpose of the role
To lead the organisation's transport function, ensuring every journey is safe, legally compliant, cost-effective and delivered to the standard our customers expect. The main aspects of the role involve co-ordinating resources between departments, driver recruitment and development, managing costs through purchase order approval and supplier relationships and monitoring performance through daily review of KPI’s.
Key responsibilities
Health, safety and environmental compliance
The Head of Transport holds day-to-day responsibility for health and safety for the Transport Operations:
· Own the transport elements of the health, safety and wellbeing framework: risk assessments, safe systems of work, incident investigation, and delivery of corrective actions
· Work with H & S Manager to update risk assessments and improve safety standards
· Manage incident reporting and investigation, using the “SafetyCulture” system
Operations
- Co-ordinate available resources on a day-to-day basis to ensure that service levels are maintained to the required standards.
- Regular contact with Inverness Depot to co-ordinate movement of vehicles/trailers between depots to cover downtime
- Manage any incidents, ensuring processes are followed and accurate information is captured and reported.
- Support sales team in meeting customer expectations by providing support to find resolutions to any issues
People
- Lead, develop and engage the transport workforce; build a positive safety culture where concerns are raised early and acted on.
- Own driver recruitment, retention and progression, including apprenticeship and HGV training pathways.
- Lead, train and motivate the team, including toolbox talks and ongoing development
- Manage attendance, holidays, sickness cover, performance and disciplinary matters, using Bright HR for payroll hours
- In conjunction with managing recruitment, drive continuous improvement in the skill set and abilities of team members, identifying opportunities for upskilling and development
Commercial and administration
- Monitor vehicle productivity/profitability, identifying opportunities for improvement
- Work with the finance and administration department to ensure that all data requirements are being met within required timescales for invoicing and accounting purposes
- Provide clear, accurate reporting on department performance and compliance
Person specification
Qualifications
- CPC in Road Transport Operations (National and/or International) — held and current.
- IOSH Managing Safely or a similar health and safety qualification
- HGV Licence
Essential
- Experience of managing a large driver workforce, including performance, absence, discipline and engagement.
- Substantial senior management experience in a multi-site transport or logistics operation.
- Demonstrable track record as, or in direct oversight of, a nominated Transport Manager on an Operator's Licence.
