Key Responsibilities:
· Support the Group Safety Manager and Health & Safety Manager in implementing the group’s health and safety strategy, policies and improvement plans.
· Conduct regular workplace inspections, audits and assurance activities across group sites and operational activities.
· Provide practical health and safety advice to managers, supervisors, employees and contractors.
· Assist with the preparation, review and implementation of risk assessments, COSHH assessments, safe systems of work, method statements and permits to work.
· Monitor compliance with risk controls and safe working procedures through workplace observation and engagement.
· Assist with machinery and plant safety arrangements, including guarding, isolation, lockout/tagout and maintenance controls.
· Support the management of workplace transport risks, including vehicle and pedestrian segregation, reversing, loading, unloading and site traffic management.
· Review and support lifting operations, working at height, hot work, confined-space work and contractor activities where competent to do so.
· Participate in the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions.
· Help identify immediate, underlying and root causes and support the implementation of effective corrective actions.
· Maintain accurate incident records and assist with determining whether incidents are reportable under RIDDOR.
· Monitor health and safety actions to ensure that they are assigned, completed and closed effectively.
· Assist with employee, agency worker, visitor and contractor induction arrangements.
· Deliver or coordinate toolbox talks, safety briefings and awareness sessions.
· Support managers and Compliance Administrator in identifying health and safety training needs and monitoring training completion.
· Promote the reporting of hazards, near misses and safety improvement opportunities.
· Engage positively with employees and encourage their involvement in workplace health and safety.
· Support occupational health arrangements, health surveillance and workplace exposure assessments where required.
· Assist with the control of occupational risks including noise, vibration, dust, hazardous substances, manual handling and workplace stress.
· Support the management and review of contractor documentation, including competency information, RAMS, insurance and site-specific controls.
· Assist with internal reporting, safety meetings, performance measures and trend analysis.
· Support compliance with applicable UK health and safety legislation and relevant guidance.
· Contribute to the development and continual improvement of the group’s safety management system - Dalux, including alignment with ISO 45001 principles.
· Liaise professionally with employees, contractors, clients, occupational health providers, external consultants and enforcing authorities when required.
· Exercise stop-work authority where there is an immediate or serious risk to health and safety.
· Undertake any other reasonable health and safety duties appropriate to the role.
Person specification
The successful candidate should have:
· NEBOSH General Certificate and NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction.
· Relevant experience in a health and safety advisory role.
· A sound working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
· The ability to identify hazards, evaluate risk and recommend practical and proportionate controls.
· Experience preparing or reviewing risk assessments and safe systems of work.
· Good written communication and report-writing skills.
· Confidence engaging with employees, supervisors and senior managers.
· The confidence to challenge unsafe practices constructively and professionally.
· Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
· A practical and solutions-focused approach.
· Competence using Microsoft Office and electronic safety-management systems.
· A full UK driving licence (access to own vehicle)
It would be beneficial to have:
· Technical membership of IOSH, or eligibility and willingness to work towards it.
· Experience within waste and recycling, construction, demolition, aggregates, transport, engineering, manufacturing or another high-risk operational environment.
· Experience investigating accidents and near misses using structured root-cause analysis.
· Knowledge of PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, DSEAR, workplace transport and machinery isolation.
· Experience supporting contractor management and permit-to-work systems.
· ISO 45001 experience.
· Training or presentation experience.
· Mental Health First Aid or occupational health awareness.
· Experience working across multiple companies or locations.
Working Hours: Monday - Friday (8am - 5pm)
