Job description
The Head of Complex Lending Products is accountable for shaping, delivering and managing Nationwide’s complex business lending proposition across SME and corporate segments. The role leads product strategy, roadmap, commercial performance, customer outcomes and end-to-end lifecycle management across lending solutions including term lending, revolving credit, asset finance, invoice finance, trade finance, working capital and specialist or structured lending. Working closely with Credit Risk, Coverage, Digital, Data, Operations, Finance, Legal, Compliance and Transformation, the role ensures our complex lending products are competitive, scalable, well controlled and aligned to Nationwide’s mutual purpose.
This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to help build the UK’s first full-service mutual business banking function and shape how Nationwide supports SMEs and corporates with the finance they need to grow, invest and trade with confidence.
Reporting to the Director of Group Business Products, you will lead the strategy, design, delivery and in-life management of our complex lending portfolio, ensuring we combine the speed, simplicity and digital experience customers expect from the best challenger banking institutions with the relationship expertise, credit discipline and structuring capability of leading established banking organisations.
You will be the senior product leader for lending propositions that matter to businesses at different stages of growth: from SMEs needing fast, transparent access to working capital through to larger corporate customers requiring more tailored, structured or sector-specific finance.
The role spans the full product lifecycle: market insight, customer discovery, proposition design, credit-risk alignment, pricing, business requirements, delivery, launch, distribution, servicing, portfolio optimisation and controlled exit where required.
You will modernise complex lending for customers and colleagues by simplifying origination, improving decisioning and workflow ensuring our propositions deliver fair value, responsible lending and long-term business resilience in line with Nationwide’s mutual model.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our London, Glasgow or Northampton office. If you’re based at our Glasgow office, this will apply from 1 April 2027 and ahead of that there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. Alternatively, you'll be located at our Edinburgh hub . There will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events, this is expected to be weekly in Edinburgh. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here .
Virgin Money is now part of Nationwide
Nationwide acquired Virgin Money in October 2024. Virgin Money continues to serve customers on the high street, and there will be a phased and considered integration over the coming years.
You’ll be employed by Nationwide from day one, delivering real impact and benefitting from a highly competitive range of benefits. We’re a workplace where you’re rewarded, recognised and celebrated.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
You will set and own the complex lending product strategy and roadmap across SME and corporate segments, translating customer needs, market insight, competitor activity and Nationwide’s Business Banking strategy into propositions that support responsible growth.
You will lead end-to-end product lifecycle management across complex lending, from discovery and proposition design through to launch, in-life optimisation, portfolio performance management and controlled change. This includes defining clear product requirements, prioritising the roadmap and ensuring delivery is commercially compelling, operationally scalable and customer-led.
You will partner closely with Credit Risk, Coverage, Digital, Data, Operations, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Business Control and Transformation to ensure lending products are aligned to risk appetite, credit policy, affordability, security, pricing discipline, sector strategy, regulatory expectations and portfolio quality.
You will make complex lending easier to access and easier to manage by improving digital origination, colleague tooling, workflow automation, data-led decisioning, fulfilment, servicing and in-life monitoring, while ensuring relationship managers and sector specialists have the propositions, insight and support they need to serve customers well.
You will act as the single point of product accountability for complex lending in senior forums, clearly balancing growth, risk, customer experience, operational readiness, conduct, financial crime, Consumer Duty, data and resilience considerations.
You will own the product performance framework, using data and insight to monitor and improve volumes, returns, utilisation, approval and conversion rates, arrears, complaints, customer outcomes, operational performance and portfolio risk. You will also lead and develop a high-performing product team, creating the pace, judgement and external market orientation needed to build a best-in-class lending proposition.
