Phlebotomist
Saltdean & Rottingdean Medical Practice is seeking an experienced Phlebotomist to join our practice team in a full-time, permanent role.
The successful applicant will provide a safe, efficient and patient-centred phlebotomy service across our practice sites. You will take blood samples following authorised clinical requests, maintain accurate patient records, prepare specimens for transport and support the smooth running of the treatment room.
Main responsibilities
- Undertake venepuncture safely and within agreed practice protocols.
- Confirm patient identity and obtain consent before each procedure.
- Explain procedures clearly and reassure patients who are anxious, needle-phobic or at risk of fainting.
- Label, store, package and prepare specimens accurately for collection or transport.
- Record procedures promptly and accurately on SystmOne.
- Escalate clinical concerns, unexpected findings or patient deterioration to a registered clinician.
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention, sharps safety and clinical waste disposal.
- Check stock levels, expiry dates and equipment within the treatment room.
- Work closely with GPs, nurses, healthcare support staff and administrative colleagues.
- Complete mandatory training and take part in supervision, appraisal and competency reviews.
Essential requirements
- Evidence of recognised phlebotomy training.
- A current, documented venepuncture competency assessment.
- Recent experience of undertaking venepuncture safely.
- Experience of communicating with patients and members of the public.
- Experience of maintaining accurate records.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- A calm, respectful and reassuring manner.
- Ability to work independently within agreed protocols and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to complete mandatory and role-specific training.
Experience in general practice, primary care or another community healthcare setting would be an advantage. Experience using SystmOne is also desirable.
This role is subject to satisfactory references, right-to-work checks, occupational health clearance and the appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Pay: £13.50 per hour
Location: Saltdean and Rottingdean Medical Practice, working across practice sites as required.
Pay: £26,325.00 per year
