Role Overview
The Security Officer will provide a professional, visible, and customer-focused security presence in support of the safe and secure operation of Clapham Junction Station on behalf of South Western Railway. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking proactive patrols, supporting station colleagues, deterring anti-social behaviour, responding appropriately to incidents, and contributing to a safe, reassuring, and well-managed station environment for passengers, employees, and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake regular, high-visibility security patrols across the station, platforms, concourse, and any designated operational areas as directed.
Conduct station searches, security checks, and assurance activity in accordance with Assignment Instructions, local operating procedures, client requirements, and relevant Department for Transport guidance.
Apply the HOT protocol when assessing unattended items, suspicious packages, or items of concern, ensuring observations are managed safely, proportionately, and in line with local procedures.
Monitor the station environment to identify, report, and escalate security concerns, safety risks, suspicious activity, and operational incidents in a timely and accurate manner.
Support the prevention, reduction, and management of anti-social behaviour through proportionate engagement, professional judgement, and appropriate escalation.
Provide a reassuring and approachable presence for passengers, South Western Railway colleagues, contractors, and other authorised stakeholders.
Respond to incidents in line with local procedures, ensuring appropriate communication with station management, the Communication Centre, emergency services, and relevant management teams where required.
Maintain accurate and auditable records, including patrol logs, notebook entries, incident reports, and check calls, in accordance with company, contractual, and client requirements.
Skills, Experience and Requirements
A valid SIA licence is essential and must be maintained throughout employment.Ability to understand and apply key security protocols, including HOT principles, local escalation procedures, incident response processes, and relevant site-specific instructions.
Previous experience within rail, transport, security, or a public-facing operational environment is highly desirable.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage professionally with passengers, South Western Railway colleagues, client representatives, and external agencies.
Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure, applying sound judgement and appropriate escalation during incidents.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to complete clear, accurate, and timely written reports.
Demonstrable reliability, punctuality, professional presentation, and commitment to agreed service standards.
Proactive approach to teamwork, problem-solving, and supporting a safe, secure, and customer-focused rail environment.
Training and Compliance
Complete all mandatory, site-specific, and role-specific competency training to the required standard prior to and during deployment.
Undertake refresher or additional training as directed by the Security Account Manager to support ongoing compliance, capability, and continuous improvement.
Use approved company systems and operational technology effectively to support patrol activity, reporting, communication, and service delivery.
Maintain all required licences, training records, and compliance documentation in line with company policy and contractual expectations.
Security, Safety and Professional Conduct
Identify, manage where appropriate, and promptly report health and safety hazards, security risks, or emerging concerns observed while on duty.
Remain alert to changes within the station environment and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption, prevent loss or damage, and reduce risk to passengers, colleagues, and the wider operation.
Exercise appropriate initiative while ensuring support, guidance, or escalation is sought promptly where a situation presents risk or potential escalation.
Maintain a calm, respectful, and professional approach when engaging with passengers, vulnerable individuals, colleagues, or members of the public in challenging circumstances.
Complete accurate and timely notebook entries and incident records to support reporting, review, and assurance processes.
Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, professionalism, and commitment to Mitie, South Western Railway, and agreed contractual service standards.
Complete check calls at the allocated times, as detailed within the Assignment Instructions, to support duty of care and operational oversight.
Contact emergency services, the Communication Centre, station management, and relevant management teams where required in response to incidents or developing risks.
