Heap & Partners Ltd is a specialist manufacturer and supplier of high-performance valves serving the energy, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, petrochemical and nuclear sectors. Based in Birkenhead, we design, manufacture and distribute products that are used in demanding applications throughout the UK and internationally.
Due to a restructuring of our Company, we are seeking a commercially minded Financial Controller to lead our finance function, consolidate financial reporting and provide valuable insight to support business decision-making.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys combining financial control with commercial analysis and operational improvement.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will take ownership of the company's financial management and reporting activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparation of monthly management accounts
- Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management
- Production of year-end statutory accounts and audit coordination
- Management and development of 3 members of staff
- Management of foreign currency requirements, letters of credit and guarantees
- Administration of payroll, group personal pension scheme, life assurance scheme
- Preparation of VAT Returns
- Managing day-to-day financial operations
- Maintaining robust financial controls and processes
- Stock valuation and inventory reporting
- Working capital management
- Supporting strategic business planning and growth initiatives
- Managing relationships with banks, auditors and external advisers
- Identifying opportunities to improve systems, reporting and operational performance
- Supporting ERP and process improvement projects
About You
We're looking for someone who combines strong technical accounting skills with commercial awareness and a practical approach to problem-solving.
You will ideally have:
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
- Experience in a Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager role
- Experience in supervision and development of accounts staff
- Experience in administration of payroll including preparation of P11Ds
- Experience in producing VAT returns
- Experience of operating an Invoice Discounting facility
- Manufacturing, engineering or industrial sector experience
- Strong management accounting and financial reporting skills
- Experience of stock control and inventory accounting
- Experience producing budgets, forecasts and cash flow projections
- Excellent Excel and financial systems skills
- Experience using Power BI would be a significant advantage
- Strong analytical and commercial decision-making skills
- Extensive experience with Sage 200 Manufacturing
- A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to get involved in day-to-day operations when required
- The confidence to challenge, influence and work closely with senior management
