Salary: £30,960 per annum
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week to include weekends

Wastesavers is a Third Sector group that delivers a range of services based in and around the Circular Economy across South East Wales. We are an environmental organisation established in 1985 and we are proud to have the same aims and objectives today, as we did 40 years ago; to use waste as a resource for change within our community. We run the kerbside recycling service for Newport, commercial recycling services across 4 local authority areas, have a chain of 11 reuse shops, run repair cafes, an IT recycling department and a nappy library, as well as hosting PEAK our alternative education provision. We currently have over 170 staff working at multiple across South East Wales and are in an expansion period.
As part of our charitable work, we run several reuse shops, dealing with the reuse of furniture, IT, electrical equipment and other household items. Currently we have shops in Newport, Cardiff, Llantrisant, Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr, Abertillery, Penallta, Pontypool, and Ebbw Vale. We are looking for an Area Manager to join our team to maximise shop sales and profits, and to help manage the day to day running of The Cabin Reuse Shop &New Lease Of Life including working with volunteers. The successful applicant will deal with customers on a day to day basis and manage volunteers in a busy environment, whilst also liaising with Merthyr Tydfil County Council & Newport City Council staff who will assist in accessing items for reuse.
The post holder requires flexibility to work weekends and cover other sites as required by the business demands.
Purpose of the Role
To develop, manage, and promote the Reuse Shops in line with Wastesavers' objectives, policies, and procedures, delivering excellent customer service, effective stock, staff and volunteer management, and operational excellence while maximising reuse, sales, and environmental impact.
Shop Operations
- Develop and manage the Reuse Shops in accordance with company objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Work proactively with internal teams and external partners to maximise the interception of quality reusable stock from Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
- Sort, record, and manage incoming stock, ensuring it is processed and directed to the most appropriate sales outlet.
- Ensure the shops operate safely, efficiently, and professionally at all times.
- Bank cash in accordance with Wastesavers' financial procedures.
- Provide management cover and operational support to other reuse sites across South Wales when required.
Sales and Customer Service
- Maintain attractive, well-organised displays to maximise sales.
- Promote the Reuse Shops through social media and other marketing activities.
- Deliver consistently high standards of customer service in line with Wastesavers' values and local authority expectations.
- Support fundraising initiatives, shop promotions, and seasonal campaigns.
- Engage with visitors to HWRC sites to encourage use of the Reuse Shops.
Shop Presentation
- Maintain high standards of presentation, cleanliness, organisation, and housekeeping throughout the shops and storage areas.
- Create a safe, welcoming, and professional retail environment for customers, staff, and volunteers.
Stock Management
- Encourage donations of reusable items and promote alternative reuse collection services where appropriate.
- Work with HWRC and bulky waste teams to maximise the quality and quantity of intercepted stock.
- Ensure a consistent flow of stock from storage to the shop floor.
- Assess, price, and rotate stock in line with Wastesavers' pricing guidelines to maximise sales.
Staff and Volunteer Management
- Recruit, support, supervise, and train staff and volunteers to perform their roles effectively.
- Work closely with HWRC colleagues and the Volunteer Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the shops.
- Foster a positive, organised, inclusive, and supportive working environment.
- Ensure compliance with Wastesavers' policies and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Administration and Security
- Complete all administrative and back-office IT processes accurately and on time.
- Ensure compliance with financial, cash handling, and security procedures.
- Maintain responsibility for shop security, including keyholding.
- Report any suspected theft, fraud, or misconduct promptly to the appropriate manager.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe environment for staff, volunteers, customers, and the public.
- Comply with all Health and Safety legislation and Wastesavers' policies.
- Report maintenance, health and safety, or compliance issues promptly and ensure safe working practices are followed.
- Undertake all training required to carry out the role effectively.
- Deliver training and coaching to staff and volunteers as required by the organisation.
General Responsibilities
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team.
- Report on shop performance and operational matters to the Senior Management Team.
