About the role
Join Balfour Beatty’s Major Projects division and play a key role in delivering a high-profile programme in Derby. We are looking for a Programme Risk Manager to support the Programme Leadership Team in shaping and delivering the Programme Risk Management Strategy across a complex and fast-moving portfolio of works.
You’ll work closely with Project Team Risk Owners and collaborate with stakeholders across Balfour Beatty, the customer and design partners, ensuring robust identification, assessment and management of programme and project risks. From driving risk-informed decision making to coordinating reporting and ensuring effective mitigation strategies, you will be central to maintaining programme certainty and performance.

What you'll be doing
Key accountabilities:
- Project teams – Support the ongoing maintenance of project risk registers, ensuring compliance with Balfour Beatty operating standards throughout delivery
- Programme leadership – Enable timely reporting into the Programme Board, including ownership and management of the programme-level risk register derived from project escalations
- Project Controls – Provide robust risk reporting to support the Project Controls Management Plan and wider programme performance reporting
- Group Risk / ERM – Interface with the central risk team to ensure alignment with ERM frameworks, standards and system updates, while contributing to best practice across the wider risk community
- Internal stakeholders – Engage across Balfour Beatty business units to ensure programme risks are understood, documented and communicated effectively
- Client & external partners – Collaborate with the client risk team and integrated design partners to align risk strategies and meet contractual reporting requirements
- Support the development, implementation and periodic review of the programme risk management strategy, cadence and approach
- Lead and facilitate risk identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring activities across projects, including structured risk workshops
- Undertake quantitative risk analysis (cost and schedule), including modelling assumptions, dependencies and constraints in line with client requirements
- Provide direct support to risk owners, driving consistent risk assessment and effective mitigation strategies through a collaborative approach
- Develop and deliver targeted risk training to upskill project teams, risk owners and action owners in line with Balfour Beatty ERM and client requirements
- Produce project-specific risk management plans where required for complex or high-risk packages
- Develop and deliver risk reporting to the Programme Leadership Team, supporting informed decision-making
- Drive cross-programme collaboration, ensuring consistent approaches and effective stakeholder engagement in risk forums
- Share best practice and continuous improvement insights with the wider Balfour Beatty risk community
- Embed risk management as a core part of programme culture, ensuring it underpins project processes, governance and controls
Who we're looking for
- Degree qualified (preferred)
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with clients and design partners
- Experience in a project-based risk management role across complex, large-scale programmes
- Strong experience in QCRA / QSRA and use of Active Risk Manager (ARM)
- Understanding of NEC4 contracts, ideally within a cost reimbursable environment
- Solid knowledge of ERM frameworks, risk processes and controls, with application across major infrastructure projects
- Ability to engage and influence senior stakeholders across all levels of the business
- Demonstrated capability to build and maintain relationships across diverse stakeholder groups
- Experience in facilitating risk workshops and delivering training
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage workload independently and proactively drive risk management initiatives
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to seeing tasks through to completion
- Confident in report writing and presentation, both written and verbal
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications
