Job Summary
We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Transport Planner to join our small logistics team. The main focus of this role is to plan, coordinate and support the daily movement of vehicles, drivers and customer loads. The role focuses on building practical schedules and routes, communicating with drivers and customers, monitoring progress throughout the day, and helping ensure planned work is completed safely, legally and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Plan daily vehicle and driver schedules in line with customer requirements, driver availability and vehicle capacity
- Allocate jobs to suitable vehicles and drivers, taking account of routes, timings, load requirements and legal limits
- Monitor live transport activity during the day and adjust plans where delays, breakdowns, traffic issues or customer changes occur
- Communicate clearly with drivers and customers regarding job details, route changes, collection and delivery times, booking confirmations, progress updates and day-to-day planning queries
- Prepare quotes or job prices when required, using agreed rates and guidance
- Check that planned routes and workloads support compliance with drivers’ hours, Working Time Directive requirements and vehicle weight limits
- Ensure vehicles planned for work are available, suitable and reported as roadworthy before allocation
- Record transport information accurately, including job details, driver allocations, vehicle use, changes to plans and completion updates
- Escalate compliance, safety, maintenance or customer service issues to the Transport Manager when required
- Maintain awareness of relevant transport rules and company procedures that affect daily planning decisions
Qualifications
- Proven experience in management, logistics, or supply chain roles is desirable.
- A valid driving licence.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and IT literacy in general.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Customer service orientation with a focus on delivering high-quality service standards.
- Knowledge of transportation regulations and safety standards is advantageous. · Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage desirable but not essential.
