About REMC
REMC is an outsourced electrical estimating business based in Glasgow. We price domestic, commercial and industrial electrical tenders on behalf of a portfolio of UK contractors, giving them senior estimating capacity without the fixed overhead of a full-time in-house hire. We're growing, and we're looking for our first dedicated estimator to join the team.
This is an unusual role and we'd like you to read the full post before applying. The work is different to in-house estimating, the way we measure performance is different, and we want anyone applying to know what they're signing up to.
How this differs from in-house estimating
If you've spent your career as the in-house estimator for one electrical firm, the rhythm of this role will feel different.
In-house, you price what comes in, one tender at a time, against one company's commercial logic and one company's preferred suppliers. At REMC, you manage your own allocation across multiple clients simultaneously, each with their own pricing approach, preferred suppliers, mark-up structure, and submission programme. You'll likely have 3-5 active tenders on the go at any one time, for different contractors, with different deadlines.
The work is more varied, but it demands a higher level of organisation, context-switching, and self-management than the equivalent role at a single contractor.
Submission deadlines are absolute. We are not allowed to be the reason a contractor misses a tender — ever. If you're someone who's comfortable with deadlines slipping by a day or two when things get busy, this role is not for you.
How you'll be judged
By client feedback and client retention.
If the contractors in your allocation are happy with the quality, accuracy, and reliability of the work you're doing for them, you're doing the job. If they keep coming back, recommend REMC to other contractors, or expand what they ask you to take on, even better.
We don't measure performance on hours at the desk, number of tenders priced, or any of the usual proxy metrics. Those things matter only insofar as they roll up into the one measure that counts — whether your clients trust REMC enough to keep using us.
That cuts both ways. You'll have real autonomy in how you organise your week, manage your projects, and shape your client relationships. There's also nowhere to hide if a client isn't happy. If you'd rather be judged on outputs than outcomes, this role won't suit you.
A note on the title and salary
This is not a senior position. It's the first dedicated estimator role at REMC, and the right person will grow into seniority as the business grows. The salary reflects an estimator role, not a senior estimator role, but the responsibilities are real and the work is commercially serious.
If you're already a fully fledged senior estimator on senior money, this likely isn't the right move for you. If you're an estimator with a few years behind you, ready to step up and run your own portfolio with the autonomy and accountability that comes with it, this is built for you.
What you'll be doing
- Managing your own portfolio of active tenders across multiple client contractors
- Taking off drawings, pricing materials and labour, building up tenders from scratch
- Producing transparent, defensible pricing handovers that clients can review and submit confidently
- Communicating directly with each client throughout each tender — answering queries, flagging risk, confirming scope
- Hitting every submission deadline, with time to spare for client review before they submit on
- Building and maintaining relationships with each client's preferred suppliers and subcontractors
- Contributing to REMC's internal templates, labour libraries, and pricing standards as they evolve
What we're looking for
- 2-4+ years of electrical estimating experience (non-negotiable — we are not a training environment)
- Excellent written and verbal communicator — you'll represent REMC directly to client contractors daily
- Problem solver by instinct — every tender has a moment where information is missing, the spec contradicts the drawings, or the BoQ doesn't match. You think your way through, you don't wait to be told what to do
- Confident reading and taking off from architectural and M&E drawings, including schematics, schedules, and specifications
- Working knowledge of BS 7671, CDM 2015, and the commercial fundamentals (prelims, P&Gs, retention, dayworks, variations)
- Genuinely comfortable juggling multiple deadlines and switching context between projects
- Self-managing — you'll plan your own week and prioritise your own workload, with support but without hand-holding
- Comfortable with Excel as the day-to-day pricing tool; experience with Trimble, Ensign, SimPro or similar welcome but not essential
- Within commutable distance of central Glasgow — this is a work-from-home role, but we need someone who can travel in for catch-ups (typically fortnightly) without it being a major undertaking. Anywhere within roughly an hour of the city centre works
What's on offer
- Working from home as standard, with in-person catch-ups in Glasgow
- Flexible working hours — you set your own pattern around the work, provided you're available during normal working hours for client queries and your clients are happy with the service. The flexibility and the accountability are a package deal
- Genuine progression opportunity for the right fit. REMC is a growing business and this role is being built with future scope in mind. The path to a more senior role is there for someone who is the right fit
- Genuine variety — you'll see the inside of contractor businesses ranging from sole-trader micro-firms to multi-million-pound commercial outfits
- A working environment that's commercially serious without being corporate
This role probably isn't for you if
- You're a site manager or operative looking to get off the tools — estimating is a different discipline and we can't retrain
- You're a recent graduate — we're not set up for ground-up training
- You prefer having one boss, one set of priorities, and one company's way of doing things
- You quietly think deadlines are flexible
- You're already on senior estimator money and won't move for less
- You'd rather be judged on inputs (hours, output volume) than outcomes (client satisfaction)
- You can't comfortably travel to central Glasgow for regular in-person catch-ups
How to apply
Send your CV and a short covering note (a paragraph or two is fine) to [email protected]. If you've worked on specific project types you think are relevant, mention them.
Examples of your work — optional but welcome. If you have any examples of past estimating work that you're permitted to share, we'd be glad to see them. Handovers, built-up Excel pricing workbooks, BoQ pricing exercises, or comparison schedules all work — anything that shows how you think and structure a tender.
Important: please only share redundant or completed tenders that no longer carry commercial sensitivity, and redact any client names, main contractor names, or project-identifying information. If you're not sure whether you can share something, don't.
We'll respond to every applicant within five working days.
