Electrical Estimator — Outsourced (Remote, Glasgow)
About REMC
REMC is an outsourced electrical estimating business based in Glasgow. We price domestic, commercial and industrial electrical tenders on behalf of a growing portfolio of UK contractors — giving them senior estimating capacity without the fixed overhead of a full-time in-house hire. We're growing steadily, and we're looking for our first dedicated estimator to join the team.
This is an unusual role in a few ways, so it's worth taking a couple of minutes to read the whole post before applying. Nothing scary — just different from what most estimating jobs look like.
What makes this different from in-house estimating
If you've spent your career as the in-house estimator for one contractor, the rhythm here will feel new.
At REMC, you manage your own allocation of tenders across multiple clients at once — each with their own pricing approach, preferred suppliers, and submission dates. You'll typically have 4-6 active tenders on the go for different contractors. The work is genuinely varied, and it rewards people who enjoy switching between projects and thinking commercially about each one.
The other big shift is how performance is measured. We judge the role on client feedback and client retention rather than hours at the desk or tender counts. If the contractors in your allocation are happy with the work, you're doing well. If they keep coming back and expanding what they ask you to take on, even better.
The trade-off is real autonomy in return for real accountability — you shape your own week, but the client's opinion is what counts. Most people who thrive here find that freeing rather than daunting.
A note on the title and salary
This is an estimator role, not a senior estimator role, and the salary reflects that. The reason: it's REMC's first dedicated estimator hire, and the right person will grow into seniority as the business grows. The responsibilities are real from day one, and the path to a more senior role is genuine — but you'll join at estimator level and grow from there.
If you're already a fully fledged senior estimator on senior money, this probably isn't the right move for you. If you've got a few years of estimating behind you and you're ready to run your own portfolio with real ownership, this role is built for you.
What you'll be doing
- Managing your own portfolio of active tenders across multiple client contractors
- Taking off drawings, pricing materials and labour, building tenders from scratch
- Producing clear, defensible pricing handovers that clients can review and submit
- Communicating directly with each client — answering queries, flagging risk, confirming scope
- Hitting submission deadlines with time to spare for client review
- Building relationships with clients' preferred suppliers and subcontractors
- Contributing to REMC's internal templates and pricing standards as they evolve
What we're looking for
- 2-4+ years of electrical estimating experience
- A confident communicator, in writing and on the phone — you'll be representing REMC directly to client contractors most days
- Comfortable taking off from architectural and M&E drawings, including schematics, schedules and specifications
- Solid working knowledge of BS 7671, CDM 2015, and the commercial fundamentals (prelims, P&Gs, retention, dayworks, variations)
- Well-organised and self-managing — you'll plan your own week, with support but without hand-holding
- Genuinely comfortable working across multiple deadlines and clients
- Excel-fluent as the day-to-day pricing tool; experience with Trimble, Ensign, SimPro or similar welcome but not essential
- Within roughly an hour of central Glasgow — this is a work-from-home role, but we meet in person fortnightly or so
What's on offer
- Work from home as standard, with regular in-person catch-ups in Glasgow when required
- Flexible working hours — set your own pattern around the work, provided you're available during normal working hours for client queries
- Real progression opportunity as REMC grows
- Variety — you'll see inside contractor businesses ranging from sole traders to multi-million-pound outfits
- A working environment that's commercially serious without being corporate
This role probably isn't for you if
- You're a site manager or operative looking to get off the tools — estimating is a different discipline and we can't retrain
- You're a recent graduate — this isn't a training role
- You're already on senior estimator money and won't move for less
- You can't comfortably travel to central Glasgow for regular in-person catch-ups
