Hillhouse Quarry Group Ltd is a family-owned business operating throughout Scotland. The Group is a major supplier of aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete and concrete products, with additional road surfacing and civil engineering divisions.
We are looking to recruit an experienced Rigid Dump Truck Operator to join the quarry operations team at Hillhouse Quarry in Troon.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating a rigid dump truck to transport blasted rock, aggregates and other materials around the quarry.
Working as part of the wider quarry team, you will help maintain a safe and consistent flow of material between the quarry face, processing plant, stockpiles and other designated areas. You will also be responsible for completing daily safety checks, reporting defects and maintaining high standards of housekeeping around the machine and working areas.
Safety is central to this role. The successful candidate must demonstrate good awareness of quarry traffic movements, operating conditions, designated haul routes and the risks associated with working around heavy mobile plant.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a rigid dump truck safely, efficiently and in accordance with site rules, operating procedures and manufacturer guidance.
- Transport blasted rock, aggregates and other materials between the quarry face, processing plant, stockpiles and designated tipping areas.
- Follow the instructions of the Quarry Management and other authorised members of the operational team.
- Complete daily pre-start inspections and routine safety checks before operating the machine.
- Accurately record and report defects, damage or maintenance requirements.
- Stop operating and report any defect or condition that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle.
- Maintain awareness of pedestrians, other mobile plant, light vehicles and changing ground conditions.
- Follow designated traffic routes, speed limits, loading arrangements and tipping procedures.
- Position the dump truck safely for loading and communicate effectively with excavator and loading-shovel operators.
- Tip materials only in approved areas and in accordance with site tipping rules and instructions.
- Monitor payloads and ensure the vehicle is not overloaded or operated outside its intended capacity.
- Keep the cab, access steps, windows, mirrors, cameras and safety equipment clean and in good working order.
- Carry out basic operator maintenance, cleaning and lubrication where trained and authorised to do so.
- Assist in maintaining safe, clean and organised quarry working areas.
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Participate in site inductions, toolbox talks, safety briefings and training.
- Comply with the company’s health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.
- Work cooperatively with colleagues across quarry production, maintenance and technical operations.
- Undertake other reasonable operational duties appropriate to the role when required.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience operating rigid dump trucks or comparable heavy mobile plant in a quarry, mining, earthworks or heavy construction environment.
- A recognised and current plant operator qualification or competency certification appropriate to the machine being operated.
- A strong commitment to health and safety.
- Good awareness of workplace transport risks and safe vehicle–pedestrian interaction.
- Ability to complete and understand daily inspection records and defect reports.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Comfortable working outdoors in a quarry environment and in changing weather conditions.
- Willingness to work flexibly to meet operational requirements.
Desirable
- Experience operating large rigid dump trucks within an active hard-rock quarry.
- Experience working around quarry faces, excavators, loading shovels, crushers and processing plant.
- Familiarity with quarry traffic-management plans and tipping procedures.
- Additional mobile plant competencies, such as articulated dump truck, loading shovel or water bowser operation.
- Knowledge of basic plant maintenance and defect identification.
- Full UK driving licence.
Working Arrangements
This is a full-time, permanent, site-based position at Hillhouse Quarry in Troon.
The role may involve early starts, shift working, overtime or occasional weekend working depending on quarry production requirements. Exact working hours will be confirmed during the recruitment process.
