The Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence (AM-COE) is a global leader in industrial-scale DLP vat-photopolymerisation 3D printing, specialising in ceramics, polymers, composites, magnets and metals.
Based in Derby, UK, we operate one of the world’s largest ceramic 3D-printing facilities, housing more than 200 ceramic 3D printers alongside OEM machine-manufacturing capabilities. We provide advanced solutions to the aerospace, automotive, energy and manufacturing sectors while leading R&D in additive manufacturing, advanced materials, automation and industrial digitalisation.
The Role
We are looking for a CAD/CAM Engineer to take ownership of the design, manufacturing preparation and optimisation of components, tooling, assemblies and machine systems supporting AM-COE’s production and R&D activities.
You will create detailed CAD models and engineering drawings, develop and optimise CAM programs, operate CNC machinery and support components from initial concept through to finished manufacture.
You will work closely with manufacturing engineers, materials scientists, machine-development teams and production staff. The role will contribute directly to internal R&D programmes, customer projects, OEM machine development, process improvement and precision manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and engineering drawings using Fusion 360
- Develop components, tooling, jigs, fixtures and machine assemblies for manufacturing and R&D projects
- Generate and optimise CAM toolpaths and G-code for CNC machining operations
- Set up, operate and optimise CNC milling, turning, grinding and other precision-manufacturing equipment
- Select suitable cutting tools, machining parameters, workholding methods and manufacturing strategies
- Review component manufacturability, tolerances, materials and surface-finish requirements
- Inspect manufactured components and identify dimensional or manufacturing issues
- Modify designs and machining processes based on inspection and testing results
- Produce manufacturing documentation, setup sheets, drawings, bills of materials and technical records
- Support machine-development, additive-manufacturing and production-improvement projects
- Source components, tooling and manufacturing services from UK and international suppliers
- Participate in customer-facing technical discussions and project delivery
- Maintain SOPs, risk assessments and engineering records
- Manage multiple projects within a fast-paced manufacturing and research environment
Essential Requirements
- BEng, Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Production or a related engineering discipline
- Valid permission to work in the United Kingdom
- Strong proficiency in Fusion 360, including both CAD and CAM workflows
- Practical experience in CNC programming, machine setup and operation
- Ability to produce clear engineering drawings using appropriate dimensions, tolerances and manufacturing information
- Good understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, materials, workholding and manufacturing methods
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and inspection results
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacture and assembly
- Experience creating components, assemblies, jigs, fixtures or production tooling
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects across R&D and production environments
- Comfortable working in a high-momentum, startup-style culture
Desirable
- Experience with additive-manufacturing technologies
- Experience designing machinery, automation equipment or industrial systems
- Familiarity with CNC post-processors and G-code editing
- Experience with precision inspection and metrology equipment
- Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance-stack analysis
- Familiarity with Git/GitHub, Python or engineering automation tools
- Experience using AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT to support engineering and manufacturing work
- Previous experience in aerospace, automotive, energy or advanced manufacturing
