About the Role
We are seeking an organised, proactive and adaptable Operations & Logistics Assistant to join our Operations team within a well-established metals distribution business.
This is a varied role with a strong focus on international logistics, import and export administration, customs procedures and transport coordination, alongside broader operational support activities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the efficient movement of materials both domestically and internationally, supporting customs compliance, maintaining accurate operational records and assisting with a range of day-to-day operational activities across the business.
This role would particularly suit someone with experience in shipping, import/export, freight forwarding, customs administration or supply chain operations who is looking for a varied position with broad operational exposure.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate domestic and international shipments, ensuring the timely movement of materials and products.
- Prepare, review and manage import and export documentation.
- Support customs clearance activities and ensure compliance with relevant customs procedures and regulations.
- Liaise with freight forwarders, customs agents, carriers and transport providers.
- Book and coordinate road, sea and air transport where required.
- Monitor shipment progress and proactively resolve any logistical issues or delays.
- Ensure all shipping and customs documentation is accurate, complete and maintained appropriately.
- Maintain accurate records within internal systems and databases.
- Assist with stock management, cycle counts and periodic stock takes.
- Monitor and replenish operational consumables.
- Produce operational reports and management information.
- Work closely with Sales, Purchasing and Warehouse teams to support customer requirements.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in import/export, shipping, logistics, freight forwarding, customs administration or a similar operational role.
- Working knowledge of import and export processes and associated documentation.
- Familiarity with customs procedures and international shipping requirements.
- Experience coordinating transport and liaising with external logistics providers.
- Excellent organisational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable
- Experience within metals distribution, manufacturing, engineering or industrial sectors.
- Knowledge of international trade compliance requirements.
- Experience with stock control and inventory management.
- Experience producing operational reports and analysing data.
- Familiarity with ERP or warehouse management systems.
