SENCo
NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in children's care, learning and development, SENCo level 3 qualification.
A Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) is responsible for providing young children with disabilities and special educational needs with the support required to help them complete their education. Their duties include supervising the teaching of children with disabilities and special educational needs in the nursery as well as supporting other practitioners to work with disabled students and identifying children with special educational needs.
Duties
- Ensuring that nursery policies and procedures are in line with the latest SEN policies and regulations
- Making sure that nursery practitioners have the knowledge and skills to carry out SEN policies and to teach children with special learning requirements to a high standard
- Ensuring that the nursery is equipped with equipment and facilities for special educational needs, including wheelchair accessibility and audio-visual learning aids
- Preparing and leading SEN training for nursery practitioners
- Assessing the specific educational needs of children with learning disabilities and providing recommendations for their support
- Producing regular reports and updates on the educational progress of children to Senior staff members and parents
- Providing one-on-one teaching support to children with learning difficulties in the nursery
- Providing referrals for children to receive support from outside agencies, therapists as well as organising school transitions.
Care for the children in accordance with any statutory requirements laid down by Ofsted and Bright Starts Day Nursery.
-Undertake certain domestic duties.
-Attend staff meetings out of nursery hours.
-Hold a current First Aid Certificate.
-Listen to and support parents who may have any concerns or issues.
Practitioners must also ensure that:
-Good quality interactions are taking place between yourself and children.
-You are engaging children with experiences as well as moving their learning and development forward.
-There is a high standard of care, covering all aspects of children’s learning and development.
-Policies and procedures are followed and implemented.
-Other practitioners and students are supported.
-Equipment is maintained to a high standard.
-You maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
-Confidentiality is upheld at all times.
-Ensure that the philosophy of the nursery is fulfilled.
-Any training to continue professional development is undertaken.
Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required as and when directed by the Nursery Manager.
