Relief HGV Driver - Builders Merchants Group
Role Overview
We are looking to recruit a flexible and reliable Relief HGV Driver to support our group of builders merchants across the UK. This is a varied role, primarily covering driver absence, holidays, increased workload, and operational requirements across multiple branches.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering building materials to customer sites using Class 2 HIAB vehicles. The role may involve nationwide travel, so a centrally located candidate with a flexible approach to working hours and locations would be ideal.
When not providing relief cover to the group's builders merchant branches, the role will involve working from our distribution centre in Buxton, supporting day-to-day transport and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
· Deliver building materials safely and efficiently to customer sites, trade premises, and branch locations.
· Operate Class 2 HIAB vehicles in line with company procedures and legal requirements.
· Load and unload materials using HIAB/crane equipment where required.
· Provide relief cover across the group's builders merchant branches.
· Support transport and operational requirements at the Buxton distribution centre when not working at branch locations.
· Carry out daily vehicle checks and report any defects promptly.
· Ensure all delivery paperwork is completed accurately.
· Maintain excellent standards of customer service when representing the company on site.
· Work closely with branch teams, transport managers, and yard staff to ensure smooth delivery operations.
· Follow all health and safety procedures, particularly when delivering to construction sites and customer premises.
· Be prepared to travel nationwide and stay away from home where required.
Skills and Experience Required
· Valid HGV Class 2 licence.
· HIAB certification and experience operating crane vehicles.
· Driver CPC qualification.
· Digital tachograph card.
· Experience delivering building materials or working within builders merchants is preferred.
· Good knowledge of load security and safe delivery practices.
· Strong communication and customer service skills.
· Flexible, dependable, and willing to travel across different locations.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
Preferred Qualifications
· HGV Class 1 licence.
· HGV Class 2 licence.
· HIAB trained and experienced.
· Previous experience in builders merchants, construction supply, or multi-drop building materials delivery.
Location
Ideally, the successful candidate will be centrally located to allow easy travel across the group's branch network. Nationwide travel may be required depending on business needs.
When not providing relief cover across the group, the role will be based at our distribution centre in Buxton.
Working Pattern
This is a flexible relief driver role. Working hours and locations may vary depending on operational requirements. The role may require overnight stays when working at remote locations.
Salary and Benefits
Salary will be discussed with the successful candidate and will be competitive, based on experience and qualifications.
When working at remote locations, accommodation and an evening meal will be expensed in line with company policy.

Pay: Up to £35,000.00 per year
