Part-Time Bookkeeper/Accountant
Job Specification
We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented bookkeeper/accountant to join our small but busy architectural practice on a part-time basis:
Location: London, Old Street / Shepherdess Walk
Hours: 2–3 mornings per week (Typically 8–10 hours per week, with flexibility to increase hours at month-end, quarter-end and during audit periods)
Reporting to: Managing Partner
Role Overview
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Part-Time Bookkeeper/Accountant to manage the day-to-day financial operations of the practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, producing management accounts, and supporting the smooth financial running of the business.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is comfortable working independently in a small professional practice environment. We are open to working patterns that suit the applicant, around family or other commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting & Bookkeeping
- Maintenance of the Purchase Ledger, Sales Ledger, and Nominal Ledger
- Management of the Cashbook and day-to-day bank transactions
- Bank Reconciliation and cash flow planning
- Preparation of Monthly Management Accounts
- Processing of Prepayments and Accruals
- Posting of Nominal Ledger Journals
- Preparation and monitoring of Cashflow Forecasts
Payroll
- Processing monthly Payroll instructions and payments
- Posting of Payroll Journals
- Liaison with payroll provider
Tax & Compliance
- Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT Returns
- Audit preparation and responding to auditor queries
- Responding to Companies House and other compliance queries
Practice Management Finance
- Timesheet management and processing for all staff
- Preparation of Job Cost Reports
- Management of Financial Budgets and Job Budgets
- Processing and managing Staff Expenses, and the corporate Credit Card
- Maintenance of Staff Holiday Records
- Assisting with fee information for completion of PI Insurance renewal forms etc.
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience in bookkeeping/accounting, ideally within a professional services or creative practice environment
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Xero, Paprika, Sage, or QuickBooks)
- Strong working knowledge of VAT regulations and payroll processing
- Experience preparing management accounts
- Familiarity with job costing and project-based financial reporting (desirable)
- Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload
- Strong communication skills with the ability to liaise with non-finance colleagues
- AAT qualified or equivalent (part or fully qualified ACCA/CIMA also welcome)
Working Arrangements
- 2 -3 mornings per week standard, with an additional morning required once a month to coincide with payroll processing and monthly accounts
- Flexibility to increase hours during audit periods or as the practice grows
- Office-based at our London studio at the outset, then hybrid-working by agreement
Salary
- PAYE
- Pro-rata FTE salary of £35-£40k, per annum dependent on experience and productivity
· Pension contribution: 3%
- 20 days per year holiday allowance (FTE)
