Job Summary
A great opportunity has come up due to a staff retirement within the Health & Safety department for a thriving, established business operating in the civil engineering, plant hire, commercial, industrial, and house building sectors. Devine is based in Cheam Surrey, with over 250 employees on 13 sites across Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, and Hampshire, so the ideal candidate will be locally based and willing to travel between sites.
This role would require the safety advisor carrying out site inspections, practical on-site delivery of Health and Safety and environmental support in the form of Toolbox talks, advice and guidance to the site managers and supervisors, operatives and subcontractors working for Devine.
Reporting to the Head of Health Safety and Quality, and working from the Bordon Office in Hampshire with regular site visits , you will play a key role in reporting and delivering the business safety strategy, reporting back trends and observations, carry out site visits and accident investigations when required, embedding a proactive safety culture and ensuring the health and safety is being fully aligned with company procedures.
Duties:
- Oversee documentation such as construction phase plans, risk assessments,method statements, inspection reports, and training records.
- Provide operational oversight of safety performance across all projects.
- Carry out investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses, implementing corrective actions and monitoring trends to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensuring all employees receive appropriate training and ongoing engagement through toolbox talks and briefings.
- Act as primary contact for site teams.
- Drive a positive safety culture, working with managers, supervisors, and teams to promote safe behaviours, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure effective communication and consultation with employees and subcontractors on safety matters.
- Give Toolbox talks when required.
- Report regularly to the Head of Heath Safety & Quality on safety performance, incidents, audit outcomes, training compliance, and emerging risks.
- Carry out internal audits, produce site reports and briefings, monitor quality processes, risk assessments. registers, KPIs, and improvement plans in line with ISO 9001:2015.
- Ensure overall accountability for safe, compliant operations, protecting the workforce, maintaining the company’s reputation, and supporting successful project delivery.
Requirements
- Graduate Member of IOSH minimum
- NEBOSH Construction/General certificates
- Strong construction / civil engineering background
- Effective communicator with the ability to engage and influence
- Good working knowledge of CDM/ Temporary Works
- Strong report writing skills to document incidents, inspections, and safety procedures clearly.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation, standards, and best practices applicable to the industry.
- Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail in fast-paced settings.
