Lake District Estates have an opportunity for an HR Advisor to join our team at our central support offices in Kendal. The post is to cover maternity leave, and we can be flexible around the length of contract (9 - 12 months) and part/full time hours.
This is a hands-on, generalist HR role supporting managers across a diverse, multi-site organisation. You’ll work across the full employee lifecycle — from recruitment and onboarding through to employee relations, payroll support, HR systems and people initiatives.
As part of a small, collaborative HR team, you’ll play an important role in delivering high-quality HR support and helping to continuously improve how we work. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, and making a visible impact in a growing HR function.

What you’ll be doing
- Providing practical HR advice and support to managers and employees across the full employee lifecycle
- Managing day-to-day employee relations matters, including absence, investigations, disciplinary, and grievance cases (with support for complex cases)
- Supporting payroll processes, including preparing and checking data and producing reports
- Maintaining accurate HR systems and records, ensuring compliance and reliable reporting
- Contributing to HR projects, policy development, process improvements, and engagement initiatives
- Coaching and guiding managers to build confidence and capability in people management
What we’re looking for
- Experience in a generalist HR role
- Good knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice
- Experience handling employee relations matters
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Experience using HR systems
- Experience and/or exposure to payroll processes would be an advantage
- Well organised, detail-focused, and able to manage a varied workload

Contract:
- Maternity Cover (flexible to agree 9 -12 months from July/August).
- Flexible to agree Part or Full Time - c 30- 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
- Salary range £30,000 - £33,000 depending upon experience/qualification
- Office based
- Travel to our sites across Cumbria is required on occassion. A pool car is available for such journeys, or businsess mileage expenses for use of own vehicle. A full driving licence is therefore essential.
