About us
Valla CIS Limited builds software for the UK Construction Industry Scheme. Our mobile app for self-employed subcontractors: it tracks their income and expenses as they go, works out what they actually owe HMRC rather than the over-estimate most of them end up paying, and hands the difference back to them.
We are a small, remote, written-first team, UK-registered in Henley-in-Arden.
The job in one paragraph
Our user is a working tradesperson. He is not reading blog posts about compliance and he is not on LinkedIn. He is watching short video on his phone at seven in the morning in the van, and again on the sofa at nine at night. We need someone who can make content he actually stops for — filmed on site, in his language, about money. Not brand films. Not carousels about “streamlining your workflow”.
This is a hands-on making role. You shoot, you edit, you publish, you look at the numbers, and you do it again next week.
What you will be making
- Short-form vertical video. The core of the job — TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts. Consistent volume every week, not one polished film a quarter.
- Filming with real subcontractors. On sites and at merchant branches: talking heads, day-in-the-life, “here is what I got back this month”. Real people, real numbers, no actors.
- Facebook trade group content. This is where our audience actually congregates. Content that works there looks nothing like content that works on Instagram, and you will need to know the difference.
- Plain-English explainers. CIS deductions, what a refund actually is, the expenses nobody is claiming. Take something genuinely dull and make it worth thirty seconds.
- App store and product creative. Screenshots, preview video and store copy for the App Store and Google Play.
- Copy in the same voice. Website, email, push notifications, in-app text. One voice across everything the user sees.
- Repurposing. One shoot should produce a fortnight of assets across four channels. Being efficient about this is most of the craft.
- Briefs for outside creators. We work with UK trade creators. You give them the hooks, formats and reference material so their content lands as well as ours.
- The calendar and the pipeline. A content plan people can see, and a production process that keeps running when you are on a shoot.
- The numbers. Views, saves, shares and — the one that counts — installs and paying users. You should be more interested in what converted than in what got likes.
- Getting the claims right. We talk about people’s money and their tax, so everything we say has to be substantiated and we never give tax advice. You will work inside the ASA CAP Code and our own claims rules. This is not a formality here — it is the difference between a good advert and a regulatory problem.
What we are looking for — essential
- A portfolio of short-form video you shot, edited and published yourself. This matters more than your CV. Send links.
- An account, channel or page you grew — with the numbers, and an honest account of what worked and what did not.
- Self-sufficient production: filming on phone or camera, editing in CapCut, Premiere or similar, subtitles, sound, hooks, pacing.
- Native-standard British English, and the ability to write the way trades actually talk — not how a marketing department imagines they talk.
- Willing and able to walk onto a site, talk to a stranger in a hi-vis, and get him comfortable on camera.
- Organised enough to run a calendar and ship consistently without being chased. We are async — nobody will be standing over you.
Desirable
- A trade background, or family in the trade. Genuinely the single biggest advantage you can bring to this role.
- Content about money, tax or personal finance for a non-expert audience.
- App or product marketing, including ASO.
- Motion graphics, Figma, or basic design skills.
- Paid social creative — building and testing ad variants, not just organic.
- Your own camera, lighting and audio kit.
What we offer
- Full creative ownership of how a new app talks to its audience — you set the voice.
- A real subject: the product puts money back in people’s pockets, so you are not inventing a reason for anyone to care.
- Remote-first and async. We write things down instead of holding meetings about them.
How to apply
Apply through Indeed with your CV and — this part is not optional — links to three pieces of content you made yourself.
Then add one short pitch: a thirty-second video aimed at a self-employed bricklayer who is fairly sure he pays too much tax but has never done anything about it. Just the idea and the hook — a couple of lines is fine.
We look at the work and the pitch before we look at anything else.
