TERM TIME ROLE
Reporting to: Head Cook
The Assistant Cook is responsible supporting the Head Cook and kitchen crew, as well as stepping in for the Head Cook as needed to ensure the kitchen operates smoothly. Additionally, the Assistant Cook should be ready to cover at other schools in case of emergency leave, or at their main work location should the Head Cook be absent.
Initiative and multi-tasking are essential for this role, and the Assistant Cook must be a strong team player. The position involves physical work, such as lifting heavy industrial catering equipment and moving tables and benches to set up the dining area daily. It also requires bending to take out hot containers from ovens and serving food over service counters. As a representative of Fresh Start, the Assistant Cook must maintain professionalism and presentability at all times, leading by example.
Responsibilities:
Kitchen Tasks:
· Assist the Head Cook in preparing hot meals, including puddings, vegetarian options, and other dishes or sides as directed.
· Train and mentor junior staff and help Kitchen Assistants step up when appropriate.
· Provide training and mentoring in other kitchens when necessary.
· Prepare the service area, hot cupboards, and other equipment to ensure food is served efficiently, on time, and in a hygienic environment.
· Report any defects in equipment, food quality, or other safety concerns to the Kitchen Manager.
· Be familiar with kitchen paperwork to step up to Kitchen Manager if necessary.
· Contribute ideas to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of kitchen operations.
· Support the Kitchen Manager in any other tasks as requested.
· Participate in scheduled deep cleans, including on school inset days.
· Adhere to all Fresh Start policies and procedures.
· Complete all necessary training, including Safeguarding, Food Safety, Fire Awareness, First Aid, COSHH Training, Allergy Awareness
Pay: £13.00 per hour
