Schools Mutual Services is working in partnership with primary schools and academy trusts across Birmingham to recruit dedicated and skilled Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) for roles starting in September 2026.

What you'll be doing
As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school. You will work closely with teachers and school leaders to help raise attainment, support pupil progress and maintain high standards within the classroom.
Depending on the school and assignment, you may be asked to:
- Deliver planned learning activities to individuals, small groups or whole classes
- Provide whole-class cover during teacher PPA time, training or short-term absence
- Support teaching and learning across EYFS, KS1 and KS2
- Deliver targeted intervention programmes in English, maths, phonics or other curriculum areas
- Support pupils with SEND, EHCPs, speech and language needs, social and emotional needs or behavioural needs
- Adapt learning activities to meet individual pupil needs
- Promote positive behaviour and create an inclusive learning environment
- Assess, record and report on pupil progress where appropriate
- Support teachers with planning, preparation and classroom organisation
- Build positive relationships with pupils, staff, parents and carers
- Follow safeguarding, confidentiality and professional conduct expectations at all times
What we're looking for
We are keen to hear from experienced support staff who are enthusiastic about helping children succeed and confident leading learning when required.
You should have:
- HLTA status or equivalent experience in a primary school setting
- Experience supporting teaching and learning across primary age groups
- Experience delivering interventions and supporting pupil progress
- Strong behaviour management and classroom management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Confidence leading whole-class learning in the absence of a teacher
- A flexible, proactive and professional approach
- A strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
The following would be advantageous:
- Qualified HLTA status
- Level 4 HLTA qualification or equivalent
- Experience supporting pupils with SEND
- Phonics intervention experience
- Speech and language support experience
- Team Teach or positive behaviour support training
- Experience working across multiple key stages
