Maintenance Operative, Care Homes
Location: Birmingham Central and Sandwell, multi-site
Hours: Full Time, 40 hours per week

We are looking for a reliable, practical Maintenance Operative to support our care homes across Birmingham Central and Sandwell. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, uses common sense and understands the importance of working respectfully in a care setting.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Carrying out day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs, including basic plumbing, joinery, decorating and general upkeep
- Completing routine inspections and preventative maintenance across multiple sites
- Responding to reactive and urgent maintenance issues calmly and professionally
- Completing routine site safety checks such as fire alarm tests and water temperature checks, with full training provided
- Logging work digitally, including photos and updates
- Keeping maintenance areas, tools and records safe, tidy and audit ready
- Working closely with care teams to minimise disruption and respect residents’ dignity
- Supporting external contractors and escalating issues when required
You will not replace specialist contractors. Your role is to keep things running safely day to day and flag issues early.
Planning and Prioritisation
This role involves managing multiple jobs across multiple sites. You will be expected to:
- Prioritise urgent versus important tasks using sound judgement
- Plan work efficiently to reduce unnecessary travel
- Balance routine compliance tasks with reactive issues
- Respond appropriately when urgent issues arise
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Full UK driving licence
- Enhanced DBS, or willingness to obtain
- At least two years’ experience in general maintenance or property upkeep
- Practical skills in one or more trades such as plumbing, carpentry, decorating or basic electrics
- Good understanding of health and safety
- Confident using a mobile phone or tablet for job logging
Desirable
- NVQ or City and Guilds qualification in a relevant trade
- Asbestos Awareness, Legionella Awareness or Fire Safety training
- PAT testing qualification
- Experience in care homes, schools, hospitals or other regulated environments
