This role is generally carried out after production has finished, the times are as follows Monday/Tuesday 10am-6pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8am-4pm.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out the daily cleaning and sanitising of all production rooms, processing equipment, conveyors, machinery, walls, floors, drains, and food contact surfaces after production.
- Follow the company's approved three-stage cleaning process:
- Initial Clean – Remove visible product residues and clean all surfaces thoroughly using hot water.
- Detergent Wash – Apply the approved foaming detergent, ensure the required contact time is achieved, then rinse thoroughly to remove all detergent and loosened contamination.
- Disinfection – Apply the approved disinfectant, allow the specified contact time, and carry out a final rinse where required by the manufacturer's instructions.
- Ensure all cleaning chemicals are mixed, handled, stored, and used safely in accordance with COSHH assessments, manufacturer instructions, and company procedures.
- Verify that all equipment and production areas are visually clean and ready for pre-operational inspection before production recommences.
- Complete all hygiene records, cleaning schedules, and documentation accurately and on time.
- Report any damaged equipment or hygiene concerns immediately to the Team Leader or Factory Manager.
- Maintain excellent standards of personal hygiene and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Support production by ensuring cleaning is completed efficiently to meet operational schedules.
Food Safety Responsibilities
The Hygiene Operator plays a key role in maintaining food safety by:
- Following all company HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) procedures relevant to cleaning and sanitation.
- Understanding the importance of preventing microbiological, physical, chemical, and allergen contamination during cleaning operations.
- Cleaning equipment thoroughly to reduce the risk of contamination between production days.
- Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), cleaning schedules, and hygiene work instructions at all times.
- Supporting compliance with Food Standards Agency (FSA) requirements, customer standards, and company food safety policies.
- Cooperating with internal audits, customer audits, and official inspections by maintaining consistently high hygiene standards.
- Reporting any food safety concerns immediately so corrective action can be taken.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company Health & Safety policies and safe systems of work.
- Wear the required PPE, including waterproof clothing, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection where necessary, and safety footwear.
Skills and Experience
Essential

- Awareness of COSHH regulations and food safety management systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
- Frequent bending, lifting, reaching, and manual handling.
- Working in cold, wet, and humid production environments.
- Regular use of hoses, foam application systems, brushes, and cleaning equipment.
