Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Carpenter to join our team on a self-employed subcontractor basis, carrying out fire door remediation works across a variety of social housing residential properties in and around the Midlands.
The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, upgrading, and maintaining existing fire doors to ensure compliance with current fire safety regulations and manufacturer specifications. The role requires a high standard of workmanship, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of passive fire protection systems.

Key Responsibilities
- Carry out fire door remediation and upgrade works in accordance with approved specifications and industry standards.
- Repair existing fire doors and frames to achieve required fire performance ratings.
Install and Replace Fire Door Components Including:
- Intumescent strips
- Smoke seals
- Hinges
- Door closers
- Locks and latches
- Threshold seals
- Ironmongery
- Signage and identification labels
- Adjust and realign doors and frames to achieve compliant gaps and clearances.
- Complete minor joinery and carpentry repairs associated with fire door remediation.
- Conduct pre- and post-remediation inspections.
- Record completed works using digital reporting systems, photographs, and compliance documentation.
Ensure All Works Are Completed in Accordance With:
- Fire safety regulations
- Building Regulations
- Relevant British Standards (including BS 8214 and BS 9999 where applicable)
- Company procedures and quality standards
- Maintain a safe working environment and comply with all Health & Safety requirements.
- Liaise professionally with clients, site managers, residents, and building occupants.
- Travel across the Midlands and, where required, further afield, staying away from home when necessary.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as a qualified Carpenter or Joiner.
- Experience carrying out fire door installations, maintenance, or remediation works.
- Strong understanding of fire door components and compliance requirements.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and schedules.
- Competent in the use of hand and power tools.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality-focused approach.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload as a subcontractor.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Own tools, transport and, where required, own PPE.
- Willingness to travel across the Midlands and stay away when required.
- Valid UTR number and proof of self-employed / CIS status.
Desirable Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Carpentry & Joinery (or equivalent).
- FIRAS Awareness Training.
- Fire Door Inspection or Installation qualifications.
- Passive Fire Protection experience.
- CSCS Card.
- SSSTS or SMSTS (advantageous).
- Asbestos Awareness.
- Manual Handling.
- Working at Height training.
