About PSP IT
PSP IT is a growing technology company specialising in digital transformation, bespoke software development, legacy system support and enterprise technology solutions.
As our development portfolio continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Automation Software Tester to join our team in Spalding and help strengthen and develop our automated testing capability.
About the Role
As an Automation Software Tester, you will be responsible for designing, developing, maintaining and executing automated tests to ensure the quality, reliability and performance of PSP's software solutions.
This is a hands-on technical testing role requiring practical experience of test automation frameworks and the ability to create robust, maintainable automated test suites.
You will work closely with Developers, Manual Testers, Business Analysts and Project Managers to identify where automation can deliver the greatest benefit and ensure automated testing is effectively incorporated into the software development lifecycle.
The role will also involve an element of manual testing where appropriate, particularly when investigating defects, validating new functionality or determining whether a test scenario is suitable for automation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks.
- Build automated test coverage for new and existing software applications.
- Identify suitable test scenarios for automation.
- Convert appropriate manual test cases into reliable automated tests.
- Execute automated functional, regression, integration and end-to-end tests.
- Develop and maintain automated API tests.
- Analyse automated test results and investigate failures.
- Identify whether failures relate to application defects, data, environments or test scripts.
- Maintain and improve existing automated test suites as applications evolve.
- Ensure automated tests are reusable, reliable and maintainable.
- Work closely with Developers to ensure software is designed with testability in mind.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines where appropriate.
- Support regression testing as part of software releases.
- Identify, document and report defects clearly and accurately.
- Re-test defects following resolution.
- Maintain test data and appropriate test environments.
- Monitor automation coverage and identify opportunities to increase automated testing.
- Participate in code or test-script reviews where appropriate.
- Contribute to defining PSP's automation testing standards, processes and best practices.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives.
- Provide clear information regarding test results, defects, risks and release readiness.
Essential Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will have commercial experience in software test automation and be able to demonstrate practical experience creating and maintaining automated test solutions.
You should have:
- Commercial experience as an Automation Tester, QA Automation Engineer, Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) or similar.
- Strong understanding of software testing principles and methodologies.
- Hands-on experience developing automated test scripts.
- Experience with one or more recognised automation frameworks or technologies, such as:
- Playwright
- Selenium
- Cypress
- SpecFlow
- Cucumber
- Other comparable automation frameworks
- Experience using a relevant programming or scripting language such as C#, JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Experience automating web application testing.
- Experience with API testing and automation.
- Experience creating and maintaining regression automation suites.
- Understanding of object-oriented programming and reusable test design.
- Experience using source control such as Git.
- Experience with defect and test management tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira or equivalent.
- Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum development teams.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to investigate and diagnose failed automated tests.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience
The following would be particularly advantageous:
- Playwright with C# and/or TypeScript.
- Selenium WebDriver.
- Automated API testing using Postman/Newman or equivalent.
- REST API testing.
- SQL and database validation.
- Microsoft Azure.
- Azure DevOps.
- CI/CD pipelines.
- Automated testing incorporated into build and deployment pipelines.
- Git-based source control and branching strategies.
- Performance or load testing.
- Experience with tools such as JMeter or similar.
- Cross-browser and responsive automated testing.
- Microsoft/.NET development environments.
- Experience testing CMS, CRM, ERP or e-commerce platforms.
- Experience working on complex integrations between multiple systems.
- ISTQB or another recognised testing qualification.
Technical Approach
The successful candidate should understand that effective automation is more than simply recording test steps.
You will be expected to create automated tests that are structured, reusable and maintainable and to understand when automation is – and is not – the appropriate testing approach.
You should be comfortable working with code, debugging failed tests and collaborating directly with Developers to resolve technical issues.
You will also be expected to identify opportunities to improve automation coverage and reduce repetitive manual regression testing.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in software quality and test automation who wants to take ownership of automated testing rather than simply execute an existing suite.
You will be technically minded, analytical and comfortable investigating complex problems.
You should be able to balance speed with quality and understand the importance of creating automation that remains reliable as applications change and develop.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the wider development and testing team while also being confident enough to recommend improvements to existing testing approaches.
Why Join PSP IT?
This is an opportunity to play an important role in developing PSP's automated testing capability while working on a variety of technically challenging software projects.
You will work closely with experienced development and delivery professionals and have the opportunity to influence how automation is used across PSP's software development lifecycle.
For someone who enjoys both software testing and the technical challenge of automation, this role offers the opportunity to develop those skills within a growing technology business.
