Technical Writer – User Manuals for Industrial and CE-Marked EquipmentOverview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to produce clear, accurate and professionally structured user manuals for heavy industrial machinery, electrical and electronic equipment, and other products requiring CE and/or UKCA marking.
You will work with engineers and regulatory compliance specialists to transform complex technical information into practical instructions for operators, installers, maintenance personnel and other intended users. The manuals must accurately reflect the equipment, clearly communicate safety information and support the applicable regulatory requirements and technical standards.
Duties
- Produce and revise user manuals, operating instructions, installation manuals, maintenance manuals and other technical documentation.
- Structure manuals in accordance with applicable requirements and standards, including EN IEC/IEEE 82079-1 and, where relevant, EN ISO 20607.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, risk assessments, data sheets, test reports and existing product documentation.
- Describe the intended use, reasonably foreseeable misuse, operating limitations and residual risks associated with the equipment.
- Develop clear safety instructions, warnings, cautions and notices using appropriate terminology and formatting.
- Prepare instructions covering transport, installation, commissioning, operation, cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, decommissioning and disposal, as applicable.
- Work with engineers and subject-matter experts to identify missing or unclear technical information.
- Create or coordinate diagrams, illustrations, photographs, tables and other visual content.
- Ensure consistency between the manual, product markings, technical documentation and declared product specifications.
- Proofread and quality-check documentation for technical accuracy, consistency, grammar and readability.
- Manage revisions and incorporate feedback from clients, engineers, test laboratories and compliance specialists.
- Deliver completed manuals in agreed editable and publication-ready formats.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience producing user manuals or technical documentation for machinery, industrial equipment, electrical products or electronic equipment.
- Excellent written English, with the ability to explain complex technical information clearly and concisely.
- Good understanding of safety-related technical writing, including residual risks, warnings and operating limitations.
- Familiarity with CE marking and product-safety requirements is highly desirable but not a prerequisite
- Knowledge of EN 82079-1, EN ISO 20607 or similar technical-documentation standards is advantageous.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies or gaps in source information.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and meet agreed deadlines.
- An engineering, scientific or technical background would be advantageous.
Applicants should provide examples of technical manuals or similar documentation they have previously produced. Experience with heavy industrial machinery and safety-critical equipment will be particularly valued.
