About Beer Shop
Beer Shop is an independent specialist beer retailer with shops and tasting rooms in St Albans, Hitchin and Bishop’s Stortford.
We stock a wide range of craft beer, traditional beer, Belgian and German beer, alcohol-free beer and other specialist products. Knowledgeable, friendly customer service is central to what we do.
We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic Bar Staff and Craft Beer Shop Assistant to join our St Albans team.
Hours and Availability
This is a substantial part-time position offering normally 24–28 hours per week, usually spread across four or five shifts.
The role includes regular evening and weekend work, so applicants must be able to work flexibly across the shop’s opening hours. Additional hours may occasionally be available to cover holidays, sickness and busy periods.
This position would suit someone looking for regular and reliable hours close to full-time employment, rather than occasional or casual bar work.
The Role
This is a varied customer-facing position combining bar work, retail sales and the day-to-day operation of a specialist beer shop and tasting room.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Welcoming, serving and advising customers
- Serving draught beer and processing shop purchases
- Recommending beers based on customers’ tastes and preferences
- Providing knowledgeable advice about beer styles, breweries and current products
- Restocking shelves, fridges and the bar
- Receiving, checking and putting away deliveries
- Supporting stock control and cellar management
- Keeping the shop, bar and customer areas clean and well presented
- Using till, payment and stock management systems
- Responding to customer enquiries by email or telephone
- Assisting with tastings, tap takeovers and other events
- Helping with the general day-to-day running of the shop
- Providing occasional additional cover when other team members are unavailable
The role includes regular lifting and moving of cases, kegs and deliveries.
About You
We are looking for someone who is positive, approachable and genuinely interested in specialist beer.
You should:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Have good knowledge of different beer styles and the current craft and specialist beer market
- Be confident discussing beer and making recommendations to customers
- Provide friendly, attentive and knowledgeable customer service
- Be reliable, punctual and comfortable working independently
- Be proactive and willing to complete a range of shop, bar and cleaning duties
- Be comfortable using tills, email, spreadsheets and web-based systems
- Be physically able to lift and move cases, kegs and deliveries safely
- Be available to work regular evenings and weekends
- Be willing to work additional hours occasionally when cover is required
Previous experience in bar work, hospitality, retail or a bottle shop is preferred but not essential.
Full training will be provided on our systems and procedures. However, applicants must already be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in beer and a broad understanding of beer styles and the current beer industry.
